Please reply to this post if you passed REG on your first attempt only using Becker. If your scores are not in your signature, could you also please post your scores in the reply?

Just a quick survey to see what my chances look like of passing REG on first try without using Wiley or any other second source.

    Thanks!

I passed it with a 77 in August. It seemed like a quarter of the MCQs were from the ancillary material. I also had an AMT sim, so be prepared for anything. Have a good understanding of all of the material in the book. Don't focus solely on what the videos and your instructors say are highly test.

    Reg 77 (Aug 11)
    Aud 80 (Nov 11)
    BEC 79 (Jan 12)
    FAR 80 (April 12)

I passed in July only using Becker, but as you can see I only got a 75. To be fair I'm also not a tax person at all. I think the most important thing is to keep doing the MC questions over and over. If you want to be confident you can pass I'd take a quiz of 20 or 30 questions from each section (A1 through A7) and shoot for 80% correct every time, and if you don't re-do all the questions for the subsections until you get there.

A general Becker strategy that worked really well for me in all four exams was to disregard the highlight/circle/underscore business they use in the lectures and take your own notes on what's important. It takes longer if you're going through the CD lectures because you have to pause it a lot but it's worth it. I remember things a LOT better when I write them down as opposed to just reading and you have a much more concise set of notes – I ended up with 10-20 pages of handwritten notes per section as opposed to 60-100 pages of notes in the textbook.

    REG (7/7/11) 75
    FAR (7/28/11) 76
    BEC (8/27/11) 81
    AUD (10/15/11, 1/20/12) 63, 91

    DONE!!!

I passed REG the first time using only Becker and only studies for two intense weeks. I did not pass by much but I am happy with the results based on the amount of time I spent preparing.

    FAR: Done
    REG: Done
    AUD: Done
    BEC: Done

I passed REG on the first try using ONLY Becker. HOWEVER, you can see (in my score) that I “only” got an 80 and this is because I have been in Public Accounting for 7 years working in a tax department! I felt slaughtered after I took REG. Granted, about 50% of my test was on the law materials and I was hoping for tax! But I truly feel like the only reason I passed was because of my experience AND Becker. If I didn't have the work experience that I do, I don't think I would have made it. After I took the test, I went back and tried to look up the SIMS in the book and couldn't figure them out.

Sorry if this is not what you want to hear – I am just being honest.

    REG - 80 (Becker only)
    BEC - 76 (Becker only)
    AUD - 71, 76 (Becker only)
FAR - 65, 74, 81! (Becker, Wiley Test Bank, Ninja notes & Audio)

I passed AUD and BEC on the first try with Becker. I passed FAR on the 2nd try, and that was only because I didn't give myself enough time in between sections to study the first time. I've taken REG 3 times and just barely failed each time. I am now supplementing with Wiley and Ninja, and so far I feel quite a bit better. These are giving me a different perspective. It's the simulations that were always giving me trouble on REG and I don't feel that Becker's are up to the task. I am very pleased so far with the Wiley test bank simulations. I retake REG again on Feb 25 and feel fairly confident that I can get those extra 2 points that I need.

    BEC: 2/12/2011 = 78
    FAR: 2/19/2011 = 73, 7/9/2011 = 80
    AUD: 4/30/2011 = 76
    REG: 4/2/2011 = 74, 8/20/2011 = 71, 11/19/2011 = 73, 2/25/2012 = 89!!!
    I am AWESOME!!

I did, but just got freakishly lucky. I really recommend using the Wiley online test bank or something because the actual test is much harder than Becker.

    B 2/12 87
    A 11/11 90
    R 8/11 86
    F 5/12 88

@TheDudeAbides — I think you accidentally left this piece of sage advice out, so I'll go ahead and throw it in for you. Don't forget to slam back a few white russians before the test…it will totally help you ace it.

I used only Becker. I finished 100% of the lectures and about 95% of the homework (none of the supplemental questions–didn't have much time for those) and at least one SIM in each chapter. I did one progress test about halfway through and one “final” exam at the end. I reviewed the study guides/class notes for each chapter. Prior to this I had pretty much no tax experience: one intro to tax class and single business law class taken over four years ago. REG was my first CPA exam. I got exactly a 75.

I had a similar experience with BEC. Did the same amount of studying (maybe even a bit less) and got a slightly higher score.

I got cocky/lazy the next testing window for AUD and FAR. Didn't finish quite as many multiple choice questions and/or didn't get to practice the SIMs…74.

I'm with dtomasello. I only have experience with Becker, but I don't think it's the software's fault that people fail.

I mainly used becker (90%) but I did supplement on hard topics with the Wiley Book. I LOVE Becker!!!!

I know you're all probably thinking it's amazing that an idiot like myself passed REG on the first try. Just goes to show how easy that one must be. I keep failing these tests. I think I should just kill myself. I’m a worthless accountant and I’m not even good at it!

@keeptryng- Don't talk like that. You know you can do it. I want you to kill BEC next time. Show no mercy!!
