Oh for goodness sakes, can I just skip AMT?

It just isn’t sticking for me. Not even remotely close.

I have taken 3 separate simulated exams and not one AMT question. I just feel like calling this topic a loss. How many questions could I possibly get regarding it? (Ok, I am just trying to justify myself here….)

What are everyone else’s experiences with this bear? I know the preferences and adjustments but that is about the extent that my brain can comprehend and retain on this topic.

If its in the book, try to have at least an understanding of it in its most simple form. If I were you, I would at least try to memorize the preference items and the different rates when calculating AMT.

We'll see this friday if my techniques paid off, I hope they did.

    FAR 02/21/13 - 95
    REG 07/02/13 - 87
    AUD 08/02/13 - 94
    BEC 08/30/13 - 85
    Ethics Exam - 90

I'd have a general understanding, maybe not as much about the calculation but at least what it is, carried forward against future income tax liability, paid in addition to regular tax, etc. I memorized the add-bakcs for individual AMT, but corp AMT, I just said forget it, if I get a question on the exam about it, I'm getting it wrong. General familiarity is your best bet IMHO.

    Awaiting license in IL.

It was my personal experience that the things you least expected to see on the exam turned out to be heavily covered.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Studied AMT in great detail; was ready to tear it up. Didn't get a single question on it.

    So mla's theory holds true.

    FAR: 50, 76!
REG: 74... (ouch baby, very ouch), 76!
    AUD: 65, 91!?
    BEC: 80! Aaaand doneskies!

    May 2012 to August 2013. Can't believe it's over.

So maybe I should PRETEND to study it…then the CPA gods will THINK I know it. Because I know it it won't be on the exam! Win!

I decided to “skip” trying to learn it because I couldn't get a good hold around it and prayed it wouldn't show up as a sim on my exam….I'll just say I should have spent some time on it and next round of studying I will!!

    AUD - 90 Pass
REG - 70,61,81 Pass DONE DONE DOOOOONNEEE!!!!!!!!

If you skip over it – you're guaranteed to get a detailed SIM on it.

    IL
    FAR (2/20/13): 76
    AUD (4/8/13): 78
    BEC: (5/20/13): 86
    REG: (7/10/13): 76
    Ethics: Done
Operation "Hurry up and pass this thing before we have our first baby in October" COMPLETED

If you study AMT and learn it backwards and forwards, you won't get a single question on it.

If you don't study it, your exam will have the world's hardest SIM on it….

I think the exam secretly scans your brain for information, and tests you on what isn't in your brain on test day…

The best thing you can do is memorize what goes in and out of AMT for individuals and corporations. Get a blank piece of paper and write it out. Simplify it as much as possible, so at least if you get an MCQ on it, you'll be familiar enough to have a shot at the right answer.

You don't have to be an expert, but you should definitely know the basics, and simplifying it is the best way to learn it, cause it's definitely a confusing subject..

    FAR - 85
    AUD - 93
    REG - 90
    BEC - 87

    Can't believe it's over!

There were definitely AMT questions on my REG exam. Don't remember if there were SIMs but MCQs for sure.

However, I agree – if you know it backwards and forwards you won't get a single question on it.

    Good luck to you.
