just took REG. two of the sims were research-based. does that mean one of them was probably the one that isn’t graded?

@Pusher_Steve is absolutely right about preparing for the SIMS. His advice is true for all the exams, but especially so for REG. There are just too many choices as to what a SIM could include for practice to be of much help beyond getting you used to the format. MCQ are a lot more efficient in helping you grasp the material which is the most important preparation for the SIMS. Also, the research tab can be of help if you are completely lost on a SIM or to verify a fact that you're unsure of. However, it is time consuming to use and can be difficult to understand.

Just wondering, are the simulations the same for everyone who takes the exam during a certain testing window or month? Basically, are all of the recent posters above talking about the same simulations?

No, they're not the same for all the exams w/ in a given period.

I just took one section a few weeks ago and had 2 research Q's as well. I really hope they were both ‘live' questions seeing how I'm 99% sure that I got them correct! Also, I'm pretty sure I bombed a 1-2 of the other sims… lol…

BTW, while we're on the topic, does anyone know how these questions are graded? Is it specifically a ‘Pass/Fail' type question where you either get 100% or 0%? Or if you are in the right section and just cite the wrong paragraph do you still get partial credit?

EDIT: Also, @palal , like someone else mentioned above, I would say the new materials (from the test I have taken) were very barely covered. If your review materials have separated the old and new material, I would basically advise you to study hard on the old material and just make sure you have a general understanding of the new material.

Two research tabs? This is just scaring me more. I am always having hard time using the research tab. What is the easiest way to prepare for the research tab TBS?

@Magayon If you are studying with Becker open up the Simulations and spend some time in the codification. It is pretty clean to navigate and get to know the general outlay of topics and subtopics. Pick out a few critical words from the question and use the search function. Once you think you are in the correct topic, use the “search within” option to refine your search even more.

While Steve's advice is good for FAR, the IRS code is a little more difficult to search thru. There is a thread on this topic

that might be of help to you.

out of my two sims, one was easy (in that i definitely found an almost-certainly correct answer in a handful of minutes) and one was tough (spent a lot of time looking [after finishing other sims] and answer prob only had a 30-50% chance of being right.

on a sim that's easier, i'd suggest drilling down through the tax code to get to the correct section… its quicker, easier, cleaner, leaves breadcrumbs, and just feels better, at least to me. for a really obscure one, like my 2nd, i did use the search function and then played around in the drilldown menu to see if its location in the code could help me decide whether or not it made sense as an answer.

either way, i wouldnt be too concerned. if i could have done all research sims, i would have.

Just took REG this morning and had two research sims. I believe that I found the answer to both but boy, I really bombed a couple of the other sims. One one of them I know I didn't get any points and on the other I am relatively sure I missed the whole point. The instructions were just so ambiguous.

What I sort of found disheartening is that I studied so many of the really difficult areas (at least to me), felt confident about them, yet had very few questions on those. Heck, maybe I did so horrible on the easier ones I didn't get any of those lol. My exam seemed to hit the same areas over and over again. I feel like I was tested on two or three topics. This is my last exam so I am sending up a lot of prayers that I get a miracle here!
