just took REG. two of the sims were research-based. does that mean one of them was probably the one that isn’t graded?

thanks. this was the first exam i took… i felt like multiple choice went alright and sims could have gone much better… but since i have nothing to compare it to, i have no idea if todays performance was a 80 or 50. hoping for the best…

i had two research questions on my last Reg exam…and I did decent. I felt horrible coming out of the exam…but i viewed the two research questions as extra points because I knew i found those answers!!!

    REG-80, 77, 77
    BEC-67, 68, 71, 67, 71, 74, 71, 74, 72, 77

    AUD-58, 62, 72, 74, 74, 75

yeah… idk if that will be the case for me. one seemed on-par of difficulty with ones i had practiced with, but the other was for something super specific and obscure (i was able to find something that seemed like it could have been the answer, but it could have definitely been wrong). the other sims were hit or miss.

it's going to suck waiting 2.5 months for the score…

Both of them could be counted. They say dont assume one is not counted. Its wierd, when i took the test under the new format I got really specific research questions and on the last one I swear I couldnt find the answer so I kinda guessed. I wouldnt be surprised if I got them wrong.

    Interesting.

    I'm sitting in t-minus 4 hours.

Redemption!!! In Q1 I only ha one research question, so I'm hoping for two today just for the sake of time.

    Fingers crossed for us both!

I just sat for REG too & it was my 1st section. It was pretty tough. The Sims were nothing like I expected. I knew nothing on 3. I only had 1 research tab though. How can you tell if the testlets got harder?

    #290757

    @la

i felt the same way on a few of the sims – not that i knew nothing, but that my prep software provided like 2 details on a topic and i had to do a sim that had like 5 different variations of it.

and on the MC, i felt like my second section was harder and my third was a little easier, so I guess i probably went medium-hard-medium. or that guess could be wrong. either way, i felt like i was almost sure on about 50% of questions, had a decent level of confidence for another 30%, and was taking barely educated guesses at the rest… hopefully that's the magic ratio required to pass.

I wouldn't put too much stock into guessing whether the questions were getting harder or easier with each of your testlets. From my experience this is difficult to determine because you truly don't know what the AICPA considers a “medium difficulty” question or a “hard difficulty” question, and how many of each go into each testlet. I was convinced my AUD questions got easier. I was even chuckling to myself during them just thinking about how screwed I was.

I took REG today as well. I didn't think the multiple choice was overwhelming but there were quite a few challenges, which I hope is a good sign. I found the simulations to be very strange and quite honestly out of left field. But I guess that is the general consensus with all sims. I don't think there is much you can do to specifically prepare for sims as they are much more challenging and ambiguous than any practice ones I have seen. Just know the material the best you can and give yourself enough time to give it your best shot.

All in all, if you put in the prep work and were not in the dark for the majority of the exam and reasonably finished…odds are you have a good chance of passing. Despite what the AICPA says, who the F really knows how they are grading these things.

I felt confident with the MC. It was just those dang sims!! Can you still pass if you did well on the MC & just ok on the sims? I've been studying for it since March with Becker so it's not like I was slacking. I'm taking a week off then it's time to tackle FAR.

@laCPA2b – I scored stronger in MCQ and comparable in SIMS and passed. I don't know how much stronger than average I was on the MCQ because the report doesn't give percentages, but I was stronger in all areas except tax for entities where I was comparable.

sims sound rough for reg.. you don't think the practice sims (like ones in becker) prepare you for it? how are we suppose to prepare for the sims?..

how do you feel about the new materials they added july 1…. would you say its worth to study those?

    #290763

@syy – i'm using CPA excel (employer paid-for system) so I don't know what beckers are like. but mine were way too simple to prepare me for those on the test.

@palal – from what i remember, i don't think i had a question on anything new… at least nothing huge like a sim… but i assume that the material will begin to appear on some tests so if you have the time, it probably makes sense to look at it

IMO, practice sims don't serve much of a purpose other than getting familiar with their functionality. Given their unpredictable nature it would not be wise to devote a majority of your precious prep time drilling yourself over these practice simulations. Instead, study your notes, rewrite your notes, MC work, etc. Do whatever you have to do to get a solid grasp on the material. This, along with saving enough time for the sims, will give you a fighting chance.

Those of you planning on using the research function for simulations, beware. Sims can be very complex and detailed. Unless you know The Code inside and out/speak in legal tongue, it is going to be very difficult to find a solution in a timely manner. Trust your brain. Give all sims your best shot and if you have time left over, then scour through the research.
