I'm studying for Reg and this is the most insane thing ever

The rules are so random and there are so many everything different. The first 2 chapters was laws and stuff and I was like easy this I can handle but now that it’s gotten into actual tax returns I feel like my mind is going to blow. I can’t even believe these tax laws are real, do I really have to remember all this stuff or is Gleim my CPA prep just going overboard and I should use a different prep software?

I have passed BEC and AUD by a landslide but I have no clue how I am going to pass this, I have a full time job and don’t even do taxes or have time to study like I used to. I honestly don’t even care about being a CPA at this point but I’m halfway done so I might as well finish but this is just madness. There has to be someway to study for Reg hats more efficent because at this rate 100 hours of studying is going to net me maybe a 50. I don’t know how I could ever file tax returns at a accounting firm because this is just madness. Thank the gods accountants have a lot of options and I work for the government because I feel like I’m about to curl up in a ball in cry in the corner just reading and looking at this stuff.

Any advice please would help I have no idea how I am going to pass this thing.

Just buckle down and keep at it, you'll do fine. If I managed to pass it, be confident that you can!

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

Looks like you hate tax but you gotta do it anyway anyhow:)

I do not have tax experience, I used Gleim and I did fine.

The volume of materials to cover is very much overwhelming but you need discipline and perseverance to breeze through.

    You can do this!

    REG -63│ 84!!
    BEC- 59│70│ 71 │78!
    AUD- 75!
    FAR- 87!

My advice is to focus on the individual tax as well as taxation of corps, partnerships, etc. as well as the taxation of property. If you can nail those on the test, you should be fine. I never read for the business law questions but, I did MC for them. Also, you will notice, on the practice exams, the test actually favors concepts over memorization. You will not need to know every tax rule that is thrown at you but, you should know concepts. There are some key items that you should memorize, such as percentages for MID, medical expenses, etc. The MC practice will guide you!

    FAR - 81
    AUD - 77
    BEC - 77
    REG - 79 DONE!

    Ex-Big Four Tax - DTLA
    CA CPA as of 3/26/14

Okay, tax is like 80% of the REG exam (all the simulations are tax). You have to understand it.

Have you never taken an introductory tax class in university/college? How did you satisfy your 150 credit requirement???

    OP,

I passed reg on my second sitting. I don't do my taxes and it's been right around 10 years since college. So, you will pass REG. Remember to leverage the authoritative literature if you can't remember any filing dates, etc.

FAR on the other hand… oh yes, FAR will make you wish you never picked up the first book in this series. Save your tears for FAR!

    AUD - 75*, 88 done 5/14! (*exp)
    BEC - 74 , 77
    REG - 65 , 76 (10 point combooo!!)
    FAR - 69 , 75

I had so much trouble with REG at first that I had to watch all the videos twice and push my exam out a little over a month. It was extremely foreign to me content wise as I had only taken a few individual income tax classes in college several years ago along with a little corporate tax. Learn the individual, corporate, partnership, and estate tax sections well and you ‘ll do fine. On exam day it came down to the overall concepts more than anything with several areas I had studied intensely left off the exam entirely. Good luck you'll get there. Just put in the time and hammer out those multiple choice questions!

I completely understand! I don't know how I'm gonna get through this one either! I was supposed to start studying last week, I read the first 7 pages of the first chapter and wanted to shoot myself, soooooooooooo boring!!! I've never done tax, and only had one bs tax class in college 5yrs ago…. needless to say I haven't picked the book back up since….
