I hate REG!

I know someone here has the name, “I Hate FAR.” I kind of wish I chose the name “I Hate REG” rather than using CPAMan. I seriously hate it. Those phaseouts, E&P, AMT, Gross Income Inclusions/Exclusions, Itemized Deductions subject/not subject to 2% floor, Casualty losses, Liquidating/Non-Liquidating Distributions….the list goes on. And there’s barely any concept. Almost all memorization!!! It’s driving me mad!! I’m so stressed and am at the point where I feel like I’m going to get a heart attack at age 26.

Anyways, sorry. I just wanted to rant. I don’t know how some people found this part easier than the other 3. REG has put the most stress on me.

    I. Hate. Reg. REG ruined my life, haha seriously! I've dedicated half the year to REG. CPAman, if you can tackle two of the other sections, you know what you have to do in order to defeat the beast. Go through as many MCQs as you possible can for REG, definitely check out the Wiley SIMs, and READ the ancillary in Becker if you have it!!

    AUD 81 (X4) Previous scores 59, 72, 72
    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60
    FAR 75 (X2) Previous score 67
    BEC 79 (X2) Previous score 58

I have the same problem. Do we need to know all the phrase outs? In Becker, cacaulty loss use $100. In wiley, they use $500 (after the insurance reimbursement) who is right? Traditional IRA and Roth IRA for working and no working spouse and the % formula…. Who can help out on clarifying these questions? Time is running out here…

If I would have 2 more weeks, I would not be this stressed.

Without a doubt, REG was the most brutal section for me, and the section where I spent the most hours. I also walked out of the testing about 99% sure that I failed…ended up with an 82….just keep going…..

Huge piece of advice – USE JEFF'S NINJA notes to help you focus….if your review materials have 300 pages on something that Jeff has 3 sentences on in his notes, then cut down and focus on the important points and don't stress over details. The key to REG is to make sure you've studied everything but knowing that there is no possible way, as a human being and not a computer, that you can remember EVERYTHING. It's just not possible.

@CPAMan, I'm right there with you! I took FAR first because I was under the impression that that was the toughest section but in my mind, REG is the BEAST and not FAR. It's my last section and I just want it behind me. I have no idea how I'm going to attack this thing. Like you said this is 99% memorization rather than logic/concepts… it'll be the death of me!

    FAR 88 (07/15/11)
    BEC 83 (08/31/11)
    AUD 81 (10/15/11)
    REG 83 (11/26/11)

@CPA man I suggest you do problems from school textbooks to memorize those concepts. Just write down the rules in flash cards and look @ them everyday. you'll not forget it that way.

@ToCPA2011- For Casualty Loss, it's $100 floor. Wiley is outdated.

I said it before and I'll say it again. The Wiley REG book is full of errors and missing/outdated information. It is the one Wiley book I would not recommend that people use. I can only hope that their 2012 book will be better.

I really feel like FAR was worse as far as studying goes, but I guess I'll find out in 2 weeks when I sit for REG.

I'm glad I took FAR first because there are some things that were covered in FAR that show up in REG.

I'm studying for REG now for my 11/28 exam. I just found out I passed BEC so I have a little more motivation. It seems that with each section I pass the more of a push I get. Even though I didn't pass FAR (thought I bombed badly) my 74 motivated me too. I need REG to be over so I can focus on FAR over Christmas break.

@Peanut- I've been practicing a lot of MCQs using the Gleim software and let me tell you, they're crushing the life out of me. Some questions are either downright tricky or just plain ridiculous. You have to see those Publisher adapted questions. Oof!! They are excellent in destroying one's confidence. But I guess it's good practice because I expect my exam to be the same way. They do help in pounding the concepts in your head, so they definitely do help, but in a brutal way, lol.

As for the ancillary material, I'm using the Gleim book, not Becker. The ancillary material is not marked as “ancillary.” It's just mixed in the chapters. But I can tell which ones are the ancillary material because Wiley omitted them completely. So, whatever is in Gleim book but not in the Wiley book is what I believe is the ancillary material. And yes, I'm studying those too. I'm studying everything and because of that, my brain is completely fried!!

Ok, as you can all see, my REG retake is very soon. I wrapping up my studied and so far, it's looking pretty good. My performance has shown a significant improvement, which is a good sign.

I better pass this time. If I don't pass, I honestly will not know what to do. I've taken on a whole new study method for REG and I'm crossing my fingers that it works. When I completely changed my study method for FAR and AUD, it worked and that's why there was a major boost in my scores. Let's hope I will see the same kind of score increase for REG. I can only pray.

Going to look like I will need a retake at this point. This stuff is a ton of information most of which I do not use except for the extreme few and the materials are very hard to remember – grasp or both.

    AUD - Passed:)
    FAR - Passed:)
    REG - Retake TBD
BEC - Missed by 3 points Retake TBD

It's almost like the topic is so complex that the review course instructors are too overwhelmed which does not really help us. What i'm getting from the lectures. Even the materials had so many updates and corrections to try to keep straight:(

    AUD - Passed:)
    FAR - Passed:)
    REG - Retake TBD
BEC - Missed by 3 points Retake TBD
