How in depth are you preparing for AMT?

I plan on relying on the NINJA Notes and then focusing on whatever I see in the practice MCQ’s… sound like a good plan? I figure if I memorize the items Jeff has in the NINJA Notes and then hammer some MCQ and see what they throw at me, I should be okay. Does anyone think I need to memorize more preference items/adjustments than what’s laid out in the NINJA Notes?

    FAR - 2012 - PASSED (YAEGER)
    AUD - 2012 - PASSED (YAEGER + NINJA NOTES)
    BEC - 2012 - PASSED (YAEGER + NINJA NOTES)
    REG - 2013 - PASSED (YAEGER + NINJA NOTES + NINJA AUDIO)

    ETHICS - 2013 - PASSED

DONE!!! Thank you A71 for all the support! Hiya!!!

I would recommend putting in some extra time to master AMT.

That's all I will say due to the disclosure rules.

Although, this is probably still a violation. Delete my post if necessary, moderators.

i dont remember from when i took REG, but i dont think i would spend a whole lot of time on AMT. I work with many people who have been CPAs and tax accountants for years, and they don't even really understand AMT. i would guess that you only need to have a general understanding of it. know the general concept of it and have a general understanding of the items that are added back to your regular taxable income to determine your alternative minimum tax

    FAR - 1/26/2012 - PASSED (78, but Lost credit), re-do 11/27/2013 - PASSED (87)!

I've taken REG twice. The two tests were nothing alike – you have to be prepared for any amount of depth on anything. That stinks because you can spend hours or weeks preparing for a topic, and find another topic hammered to death while what you studied is barely touched upon. I know. Hoping for my “luck” to swing the other way next weekend, and trying to expand the number of areas I feel good about.

    B: 77 (LC), 75
    A: 63,74,88
    R: 60,67,80
    F: 71,74,74 again, and 86 - DONE!

    Ethics and application - done.

I would know the mnemonics that Becker mentions and whether you add/subtract, but wouldn't spend too much time since there are hundreds of other topics that are covered.

    Journey begins in July 2012.

    FAR - 87 (8/7/2012)
    REG - 89 (11/19/2012)
    AUD - 95 (1/17/2013)
    BEC - 81 (2/26/2013)

I will say what is says in the Becker video, which is that you will probably never see a SIM on AMT. Becker said it, not me! However, their passkey says you should know the components of AMT, and whether they're adds/subtracts, like the person said above.

Take it with a grain of salt, though. I was banking on one particular topic not being emphasized in my REG exam, and sure enough there were several MCQs and a SIM on it. You just never know. But I wouldn't try to become an expert on it or anything, just as with any topic. The exam covers so much material, they can't possibly go so incredibly in depth on too many things.

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂

Not sure what I can say but you should know it. Becker and other prep courses don't know what topics the SIMS will be.

    AUD Passed!! 7/2012
    BEC Passed!! 10/2012
    REG Passed!! 10/2013
    FAR Passed!! 12/2013

No review course can know exactly what will be on the exam, but they can look at historical information and make educated predictions. I think they say that about AMT because it is so complicated and the test is only 3 hours long. Of course you should be familiar with AMT along with everything else that has the possibility of being tested, but I would think the likelihood of seeing a complicated AMT calculation on the exam is not that high. I'm not saying that based off my own experience because I have no clue what was on my exam, it was five months ago. I'm just saying if I were retaking the test, I wouldn't spin my wheels on it. It's just too complicated to try to learn inside and out. Just my opinion, and again, anything is possible.
