How important is contracts & UCC for the REG exam?

If you would put a “weight factor” on the relative importance of contracts and UCC to the REG exam as a whole, what would that be?

I can't give you a number. I think as a general rule, business law is not tested on simulations, so out of the 40% part of that, they aren't represented at all.

However, there was a lot more business law problems in my multiple choice than I expected, and I was very glad that I spent “too much time” on them. Hard thing is that business law problems tend to stand out so they might have been overrepresented in my memory.

But I think it's very worthwhile to understand the very basics. You don't have to be a master of every little exception, but just be aware of something like the different types of collateral, the hierarchy of securitizations, especially with PMSIs.

So don't neglect them. Total they represent about 20% ish of the exam, so you can't blow everything off.

Watch that — that business law isn't tested on the sims. All I will say is that I have taken REG twice (73 both times) and the last time I took it (Oct 1st) would completely blow that statement out of the water.

Are you trying to say that business law is in fact tested on sims?

I wish B-Law was tested more… took REG twice and had no simulations on it and seemingly very few MCQ's. Isn't B-Law only 20% anyway?

Off the top of my head, I want to agree with bronxbombers in that it is 20%.

The CSO should have the specifics.

I generally recommend getting proficient in them.

In my experience, these exams have a tendency to detect what I am weakest with and really gouge me.

Well again, in total they represent 20%. So yeah, you can say there's less bang for buck with business law, but you CAN'T blow it all off. It sucks, but you still need to study all of business law.

If I can do it all over again, I might have done business law first, since that's more conceptual and big picture, and then study tax so it's fresher going into REG.

^I like that suggestion from Akvod. Looking back, I wish I had focused more on tax heading into the exam. B-Law tends to be in the back of books, so it gets the most recent focus and really pushes tax out of our brains.

I am focusing on business law first, tax second. I find BL a lot easier to deal with, so want to make sure I spend those last 50 productive hours with a clear focus on tax.

    — That should answer your question!

Yeah. It's good you're aware of that. It's SUPER important that you don't spend too much time on business law, if it's going to sacrifice time for tax.

Like I said, can't blow off law completely, but tax is where the prize is at.

Also, I don't know what study material you're using, but there's a chapter in Becker that covers securities regulation (e.g. 1933 and 1934 act) which is worth about 20%ish on its own. That should get as much attention as tax.

Read it several times, it does not make sense for a non-English native.

    Akvod:

By “spending too much time”, you're referring primarily to study time and not exam time, right? I am using Becker, and yeah the 1933/1934 stuff is important for sure… I would not say as important as tax though since it is a much much narrower topic, but I agree it is a must to know that stuff. If it gives 20% of the exam, than I am really happy about that. Everything but individual taxation is fine with me, where I am now (still got 9 days left).

Basically treat R5 like R1-R4 in terms of importance.

R6-R8 don't neglect it. I say do those first, and then just do progress test for those 3 sections over and over again to both help you retain the knowledge and to also help fill in some gaps in your knowledge.

What's your status right now? Have you gone through R6-R8 already, as well as R5? If so, I would recommend this:

    1) Study R3 and R4 now since they're higher in terms of points, they have fewer topics, the topics overlap, and its more conceptual. Master them in 2-3 days.

    2) Study R1 and R2 for the remainder, while doing progress tests for the other chapters.

Sorry – don't know how to be more clear without divulging too much information. I wrote both times – “Watch that — that business law isn't tested on the sims. “

I can't think of an easier way to explain it. Best of luck to you.

    ^^ that.

Something huge on b-law and another one not so huge on b-law and they were both on the same test!!! (I took it twice. Both times came out with a 73.) I was in major shock since the 1st test I hardly saw anything b-law related. I almost walked out and cried!!
