What do you do when a bad test experience completely shatters your confidence?

I’m in serious trouble here…I’m exhausted, stressed out, I want to quit, I don’t want to go back, I feel completely stuck and I just want to spend time with my kids and wife. I want to go on vacation at the end of the month and not WORRY about this freaking REG test that I should have passed last Tuesday!

No, I’m not that big of a baby that a single failure sends me into a tailspin. I think this is the totality of my situation in life is finally catching up with me.

I studied hard all day yesterday but just hit bottom today. I need some motivation and words of wisdom. Right now, this effort seems as attainable as Mt. Everest.

I must get on this site every time you post. 🙂 Ok so serious talk now. You are doing awesome. an 87 on AUD and an 88 on BEC. That rocks!!! You had one failed test so far. I know you tried before and quit but that is the past. You want this now. Even being exhausted and drained emotionally, physically….waaaayyyy deep down you want this. You will regret it for sure if you quit again. 50% land sucks…well really I think all the stages suck! Why do you want this? Maybe you should write that down, read it, have a break down, cry, read it again, get pissed, then pick yourself up and channel that anger into motivation. Get medieval on REG. You are going to pass next time. You had rocking scores on two of the sections. You can be a CPA by the end of the year, heck even by the end of the summer!! On side note though, try to squeeze in some exercise…even a 10 minute walk around the block. You will feel better. Yoga helps me immensely stay focused. Rooting for you!

    B: 81 (3X) May 2012

    R: 86 (2X) Feb 2012

Hey, you are almost there. Don't throw them all away. Trust me, take 1 week off and don't think about anything! Then you will get really bored and want to study again. Heck, take 2 weeks off…

And you would still be ahead of me. =0

I spoke on the phone this week with a lady that went from a 69 to 80 and the only difference in her prep was the ninja audio and notes. Email me before you throw in that proverbial towel. -Jeff

Oh, please don't give up. I take REG at the end of August, and I'll need you to beat it up a lot so it'll be weak when I face it.

I've already weakened FAR for you when you finally face it. 🙂

    You can do it!

    AUD - Passed
    FAR - Passed
    REG - Aug 20th
    BEC - TBD

Drama Ninja….I like that very funny.

Oh make no mistake about it, I am not quitting. My problem is just that I went from a person having torn up two parts (then life changed in almost every way–except I didn't contract the flesh eating disease) and I failed REG. Having stalled here during a previous attempt, I really needed to get REG. I think I studied so much I was physically and mentally exhausted, on test day I simply couldn't think….truly was having problems telling someone my name.

However, confidence is a great big key to passing these tests and I have lost all of mine. I went from someone to was going to fast track this test to someone who is hoping to pass this test to someone who worries that they cannot get past REG (and then there's FAR). I think cumulative stress, fatigue and life events have worn me down. I'm just hoping I can find some resolve somewhere.

@cpapending…when you restudy for the test, make sure you re-read the book at least once. For each exam, I read the whole book three times, and every time I read it, I always found something I missed or already forgot since last time. This CPA exams journey could be very emotional, and you will get up from where you fell…my advice is to put your emotion aside for a while and study like a zombie. It likes an athletic pushing to the finish line, you got to ignore the physical pain for that last minutes. Btw, what did the review report tell you what your weakness are?

Study through the pain…..that's it. I had a good session this morning.

Had a good session this morning, my mind seems to really like the read, write notes, make note card techniques. I should be able to go through those note cards probably 3 times going down on the trip and 3 times coming back (that would otherwise be dead time).

As for my score report, I don't know, I haven't received anything back other than what's on the NASBA site. I'm in GA so I don't know if there's anything that comes back, honestly. I'm pretty sure that the SIMS are what killed me….I think they probably threw out the SIM I did well on and kept the other one I didn't. I did great, I think, on the MCQ's but when I got to the SIMS it was like my brain went into shutdown mode (kind of started moving in slow motion). I dunno.

@cpapending…reg is not different from aug and bec in term of difficulty. Your bec and aug scores are impressive, and that demonstrate your ability to pass reg. don't get intimidated by it just because you didn't pass it once. Just know what your weakness is and study those, possibly combined with Wiley test bank, which is really helpful. Give it three weeks of solid study, you should be ready to go for another impressive 80s in early July.

    Thanks Convertible.

I just scheduled for 7/13 (DUH DUH DUH) that's right, FRIDAY the 13th. I can't think of anything scarier than REG on a Friday the 13th! 😀 I now have an anchor target and I gotta say that the $246 fee was PAINFUL, especially since my company doesn't cover retake fees).

-I have this week and next to go through the taxation notes in Wiley (tax SIMS killed me no doubt) and I will work the CPAExcel MCQ's and SIMS as I go. This should cement any issues I have with taxation.

-The following week I have my vacation. On the ride down and ride back up, I will pound the note cards with wife's help–I drive. While there I will basically do my normal weekday study schedule. Up early to study, go play until 2 or so, study, go back out to play until dinner and then study thereafter. Stop around 9 or so to have time with the family. If I meet goal 1 above, then I can use this time to do Wiley and CPAExcel MCQ's until I puke.

-Once I get back, I will have two intensive weeks to solidify any problems I have with MCQ's or SIMS and go kick the everloving HECK out of this REG exam. I'm peeved off now. Really really peeved off.

That will leave me 7 weeks to study for FAR with my REG grade coming back at the end of July. I don't really like studying for another section while waiting on the grade from another but I will not have much choice. I think that if I am careful, I can ensure a passing grade on REG this time.

    Thanks for the encouragement all.

I'm not a healthy person by any means but one thing that I wish I would've done while studying FAR (in a total of 5.5 weeks. i'm sure you can imagine the stress I was under) is exercise. I don't exercise regularly at all but I've started recently so that I can lose some weight and just to release some of the stress that comes along with these exams. I feel like in order to perform my best on an exam and while studying then my body and mind is worth taking care of. Hope this helps 🙂 and good luck!

You have plenty of time to study your reg then. Have fun on your vacation which is as much needed as studying. Good luck on your future tests.

    EELCPA….

I'm not healthy either and I really worry about blood clots in the legs due to sitting so much. So here's what I will do that seems to help a little bit. For me, exercise right now is out of the question given the rigors of my job, my hour drive each way, kids, wife, lawn to mow, etc.

So when I get to the end of a section, I jump up and grab the kids and we will do 50 jumping jacks or push ups or something. Something to get the blood flowing and it gives me a silly time to spend with the kids who think it's funny to see their old man doing jumping jacks.

My body responds oddly to stress, almost like my wife when she was pregnant. She'd be hungry but as soon as she started eating, she'd get kind of sick to her stomach. With all the stress and goings on, I've lost about 20 pounds. Probably not the healthiest way to lose weight but if you get sick after eating half your meal, what's the point of eating further. So I have decided to try to pick better choices so that a) I am not just eating junk and b) I still get taste.
