Hi guys,

I found out a few days ago about my REG score and I did not pass. The SIMS really threw me off. I had a lot of sims out of the blue. My question to guys is – how do I best prepare for the sims? Any advice? Has anyone tried “Gleim Simulation Wizard?” I was thinking of purchasing that to help me prepare for the sims. How are the NINJA Sims for REG?

Please help. I only have 1 more try left before I lose my BEC 🙁

I am in the same boat. I failed REG with a 68 and I have to pass it next testing window or else BEC expires. I feel the pain!! I purchased the NINJA MCQs and the book and also got the flashcards to study with some other material besides solely becker. I also have Ninja notes (had them on the first take of the exam), so I'll revisit those as well. For me…I just need to own my weak areas and really make those strong areas. I plan to work MCQs like crazy and practice some SIMS. I just don't know how you can REALLY prepare for SIMS since they can be all over the board in variety. In my other exams, I didn't practice SIMS much. I just made sure I knew the material and that allowed me to work SIMS just fine. Knowing how to navigate the IRC is helpful though.

I can attest that Gleim Sims are the real deal. The Gleim Sims LOOK & FUNCTION like the actual exam sims down to the layout, colors and fonts used.

Now, I've completed over 55 Gleim sims between FAR, AUD, and REG, scoring an avg around 70% and another 10-15 NINJA Sims for AUD and REG and I can say that none of them have 100% prepared me for what is on an actual CPA exam, but doing the Gleim Sims helped to get the feel of the Sims and I think that alone has helped me manage to get enough pts on the Sims to pass both FAR and REG.

Anyone else have some good advice on how to better prepare for REG sims? The sims is what keeps messing me up.

Get ninja 10 point combo. That's honestly all the advice you need. I used Yaeger/Wiley first time and bombed. Really used Yaeger/Wiley second time and got the worst score possible. Used ninja 10 point combo 3rd time and passed with room to spare. If your problem is sims, like mine definitely was the 2nd time, this will help-there's no comparing ninja sims to Wiley. Granted, it's better overall, but especially the sims.

What part of the 10 point combo do you think helped you the most @LongShot?

Notes and mcq, no doubt. The audio was awesome to reinforce everything when I had time to listen to it. Honestly, never really used the video. The notes included the best explanation of tax I've ever had-Yaeger cover the law part great and that wasn't my problem the first 2 tries, it was the tax. And the mcq were way better than Wiley. Sure, they were pretty much the same questions, but the explanations were better and even just the ratio of tax to law was helpful as hell. And the sims are hands-down the best. If you don't want to go for the full combo, I would absolutely go for notes and mcq and that'll make all the difference in the world.

The SIMS killed me these last 2 times.

I am now facing the issue that I've memorized the NINJA REG SIMS, and can't handle the function of WTB SIMS.

Someone else here mentioned Gleim.

I'm glad @FullTimeStudier mentioned how it looks. Looks like I'll be spending all this summer on NINJA MCQ + Gleim SIMS for REG.

How do y'all know you are ready for your retake? Do you assess based on your average MCQ scores or just make a time-frame (like 3-5 weeks) before you take the exam again? Or do you take practice exams?

I knew I was ready for the retake when I got my passing score. I set the retake date, studied like crazy, and didn't relax till I'd passed. Though I think my trending score in ninja mcq was somewhere around 70%. I think. If anyone ever tells you they're ready they're a liar or a fool-nobody feels ready. Except maybe those punks who went to Wake Forest, or whatever, that has a ridiculous passing percent every year. They probably feel ready and mean it. But we didn't go there.

Here's the deal. I failed REG on the first attempt by 2 points. I blamed it on SIMS but the real reason why I failed was I didn't have every concept down cold. I scheduled the next exam at the very last day of the testing window so it gave me 2 months to get everything down pat.

I started with reading the Wiley books again to pick all of the details in case they try to sneak something by on MCQ as it gets harder. At the same time as I am traveling to and from work and taking breaks during work, I break out NINJA Audio and Notes every day I am at work. This buys me about 1hr of study material. After work I hit up the Notes again at Starbucks sipping tea. This will be another 1-2hrs of study time every night Monday to Friday. On the weekend I spend 2-3hrs at Starbucks. I would do this routine until 2 weeks before the exam and I purchase NINJA MCQ. Now that I pretty much memorized all of NINJA Notes with 2 weeks to go. I just spend the 1hr at work with notes and devote NINJA MCQ on the night shift. I ended up only completing about 300 MCQ and 2 SIM practice questions before test day arrived. At this point, I was fairly comfortable with the material having memorized pretty much the core concept of REG. I ended up going from a 73 to 83 in 2 months time with no background in taxes and always struggling with SIMS on all of my exam.

REG SIMS:

1) do research question first

2) look at every question and when instructions say leave no field empty, fill all fields in with 0.

3) then start with the easiest and work your way up to the hardest (Ninja Sims are great practice).

4) You can sometimes find answers in the authoritative literature, but do not start there, because it is a massive time warp (last thing you need to deal with on this exam)
