Failed REG again – I want to give up! - Page 2

This will be my 3rd time studying for REG (and last part!) The first time I ran out of time and pretty much guessed and/or left some of the answers in the Sims blank. I knew I failed that one after leaving the test center. After I got my score breakdown, I first focused on my weaker areas, did a ton of MCQs, and rewrote my flashcards. I then studied the material I scored comparable in. It seems like this method definitely improved my score. Both times, I used Becker materials and Wiley MCQs and made my own flashcards.

The second time I took the exam, I kept watching the clock so that I wouldn’t run out of time again, which made me feel like I was rushing through the exam questions. I was just so disappointed in myself after finding out I failed the second time. Is there anything I should do differently with my study strategy? My exam is rescheduled in 5 weeks. This time I purchased the Ninja MCQs. I plan on going through the Becker Final Review, rewriting my flashcards, and doing a ton of MCQs and Sims. I feel like I learn the best when I do the questions. Hopefully the Sims in the Ninja review will help me out.

    1st time: Score 60

    Ethics Legal Responsibilities – weaker

    Business Law – stronger

    Fed Tax Processes – stronger

Taxation on Property Transactions – weaker

    Taxation on Individuals – comparable

    Taxation on Entities – weaker

    MCQs – weaker

    Sims – weaker

    2nd time: Score 69

    Ethics Legal Responsibilities – comparable

    Business Law – stronger

    Fed Tax Processes – comparable

Taxation on Property Transactions – comparable

    Taxation on Individuals – comparable

    Taxation on Entities – weaker

    MCQs – comparable

    Sims – weaker

If you passed FAR, you can totally own REG. I used Ninja Audio as a supplement to my review guide (Jeff single-handedly taught me Like-Kind Exchanges and Involuntary Conversion rules). There were items that I didn't quite understand, and instead of glossing over them or getting to know “just enough”, I decided to really hammer on those topics. I made giant charts and pinned them on my walls. I wrote flashcards. I wrote & re-wrote lists (I'm looking at you, AMT).

In the end, I overstudied the items I felt weak on, but overall it worked! And, seriously, the Ninja Audio is great for explaining things in a different way than your study guide might have.

    AUD: 84 - Oct. 2013
    BEC: 83 - Feb. 2014
    REG: 91 - May, 2014
    FAR: 68, 96 - Oct. 2014...DONE

    CPAExcel, Ninja Audio (all sections)

I've passed the first 3 parts of the exam, and I'm going to be taking REG again for the 4th time in July…. If I don't pass it this time, then I'm going to lose FAR.

I'm giving it everything I've got, because I don't think I can handle going through this whole process again.

    REG- 61 , 72 , 71 , 78
    FAR- 86
    AUD- 74 , 84
    BEC- 77

“You will not pass till you get a comparable in simulations, they are woorth 40% of your score and they will never pass you with a weaker in it, Period. Happened it to me 2 times, and when i got a comparable in simulations i got a 78 in regulation and i was still weaker in other areas, but just the fact that that I had comparable in simulations I passed.”

Mena je twa, how were you able to get a score report with a passing score? I was under the assumption you would only get a report if you failed. If you got a 78, you shouldn't be able to know whether you were comparable or weaker in simulations, right? Unless some states give out reports regardless of whether you pass or fail?

If you passed far, you can certainly handle REG (as was said above)!

I wanted to give up when AUD expired. I got mad and angry. Angry at all the time I spent in my kitchen studying, mad at all the events I missed. I knew deep down inside that I would never forgive myself if I called it quits, so the only logical thing to do was to… get this [BLEEP] over with! I got so mad that I posted an 88.

You can do it, you will do it. Quitting only works if you don't tell the entire A71 crew, now it's too late! Sorry, but now you're doing it for your kid AND for us!!!!! 🙂

If you need to know any sort of filing dates – there are a bunch for estates and stuff – they are in the AL as are any thresholds and rules. Know how to use the AL, could be a free SIM.

You hafta, hafta, hafta, hafta know like kind exchanges inside and out. When is it recognizes and who recognizes how much. I took REG twice and it was always there grinning front and center at me.

and oh! BTW, I purchased Ninja after failing REG… look at that score jump! Do you drive? Ninja audio in the car non-stop until you can finish Jeff's sentences.

    AUD - 75*, 88 done 5/14! (*exp)
    BEC - 74 , 77
    REG - 65 , 76 (10 point combooo!!)
    FAR - 69 , 75

Wow – you guys are So encouraging! This is awesome. I've decided to keep studying for BEC and then come back to REG in August – for those of you that retook REG and passed, how much time did you give yourselves to retake? Did you just dive into MCQs again right away? What was your strategy?

    FAR - 02/24/14 - 86
    AUD - 04/03/14 - 88
    REG - 05/29/14 - 68 Retook 11/22/14 - 81 I PASSED!!!!!!!!! IM DONE! Thank You Jesus!

Hang in there with REG. It is such a tough exam, and may even be the toughest depending on where your strengths and weaknesses are. I work in tax accounting and likely took REG for granted as knowing the majority of it when I first sat for this exam. Nothing will prepare you more than reading the material and repeatedly hammering on multiple choice questions and simulations. Also, another thing that helps is to keep an Internet timer going to track how much quality time you are putting in to each study session. I would find that many times I would sit down for three hours to study but was only getting maybe an hour and a half or so or real study time because of distraction.

@ Duncan – you make a good point. I think I'm going to make sure I understand each and every answer to each and every question this time around. I did do about 1000 MCQs, but I could have probably drilled down to really understanding why certain answers were wrong and why others were not. Simulations though… I'm not sure how to tackle those – but I'm sure I would have passed had I done better on the Sims.

    FAR - 02/24/14 - 86
    AUD - 04/03/14 - 88

I always do good on the Simulations, I think I've scored “Stronger” on each failed attempt.

REG sure is a beast for someone that has no Tax experience….. 🙁

    REG- 61 , 72 , 71 , 78
    FAR- 86
    AUD- 74 , 84
    BEC- 77
