Fail Again???? Help with REG please!

    I been struggling with REG for over a year now. When I first started taking the different sections of the CPA back in 2010 I scored a 69 in REG. After that I took a break since I was a bit overwhelmed because I put all the effort that the Becker review course tells you to do (I seriously study!!) and I still fail for REG, and other sections of the CPA. When 2011 started I put my priorities in check and I satrted again, with REG. I double my effort, and gave study time to what I needed to improve. Long story short I took REG but FAIL in each of the last three windows: 73, 74, and 65 in the past August. Overall in 2011 is been the same story, good or great (comparable, stronger) with usually just one weak area in the MC’s and always a weaker performance in the SIMs. Having my last scoring being the lowest score I had ever gotten in REG, after I actually knew and understood everything a lot better than when I started and ironic enough I felt that for the first time I found the SIMs bearable but score weak as always, I need help. After 4 fails attempts (and a lot of time and money gone) I feel that Becker isn’t working. Can somebody help me out? Any reccomendations of what other course to take? I know the other big names, Yaegar, Roger, Wiley, Gleim, but I just need an honest opinion of which one is a better fit for REG. I only have 2011 software and books so they expire by the end of the year, but for REG I just can’t go on with Becker. But i am not even sure is I should even try Becker for the other parts after my experience with becker. Please, feedback is really apreciated.

    @Another,

    This exam can be a real pisser. I will sit for REG for a second time in November. But I was in the same spot on FAR and BEC. I had used Becker on both of these but on the third try I incorporated some changes. First for FAR, I used the Yaeger cram. I felt like I needed the teaching style more than a review, which is more like Becker. I also incorporated a couple of different test banks. I think for all the exams using different test banks is ideal. I also started taking notes and reading the book. For BEC I used a Gleim free trial, Becker and WIley. For me , the biggest problem with Becker is that I start to memorize the answers really quickly. I felt like I needed to keep thinking and not just recalling something. I also read the book and took notes. I also took notes on the mcqs I got wrong. I would reread these at night in addition to rereading my written notes on one chapter in the evening.

    For REG, I will use the Becker testbank, Gleim, and a free trial of CPAexcel, and the Yaeger cram. I have to be honest that I didn't put in quality study time on REG. I didn't have that focus. I have heard positive things about Yaeger on REG on these threads. I would search through the threads for more info.

    I don't know if my ramble is helpful, one thing I can say is that there are tons of people here that know how you feel. Have you read through the REG threads at all? It would probably be a good source for info.

    Don't give up, have some faith, you will get there. Best of luck.

    What I did with REG and with all of my other sections was make my own flashcards based off of what I highlighted in the Becker book. It takes forever to do, but I feel that the act of writing it all out helps get it into your head. I would do one chapter a day about a week or so before the test and leave myself a day or two to review them and work MCQs. Also, REG is one section where you really can't blow off the ancillary material. It seems like I got quite a few questions from it, so make sure to study that big section of ancillary material in the middle of the book.

    Also, are you struggling more with the tax stuff or the business law stuff? The tax material can be really hard to get even with Becker if you didn't have a strong background in it in school. However, I feel as though the business law material is covered sufficiently in the book. Maybe Becker just doesn't work well for you, though. I honestly can't recommend any other software since I only used Becker, but I do recommend making the flashcards that I mentioned. It is a very arduous task to do, but it worked for me.

    Best of luck to you in the future.

    With REG I actually ordered a tax guide book from amazon.com to help put the basic concepts in more simple terms. For me it kind of just helped me undestand the basics alot better so I had more ammunication when I went to work on the MCQ's. Other than that, its going to just be practice practice practice on MCQ questions until I learn how to do this stuff. Im ok on the law part, but the tax is getting me.

    Keep at it!!! you are so close! I bet at this point you've pretty much got most of the concepts down, you just got to practice answering the MCQ questions.

    Thanks everybody that posted!

    @jdd32005:

    I actually done the flashcards. I written my own flash cards, and not just that, I also used an APP in my Itouch and created something similar to flashcards which I studied everywhere I went. I didn't though of it like xtra work, I took it as part of my study plan. As for having problems with either the law or tax part, I can say than no. I had never struggle with the Business Law MC's, which I always score stronger. As for the Tax, the only time I had a weaker performance was at the individual taxation, and entity transactions (in my first attempt). But I improve in my subsequent attempts. I do agree that the ancillary material for “ethics and responsabilities..” that Becker really doesn't cover at all, gets tested, a lot. I wish hey would really had a better way to cover the subject.

    @yankee: I have only used Becker, so what are test banks, what is the yaeger cram, the gleim free trial, and CPAexcel free trial? And where do I find then? And how do I add then to my Becker material, or can I just study witth those by themselfs (I really want to leave Becker behind if possible).

    @ Another

    Just wanted to let you know that Becker posted some youtube videos for that Ethics stuff to supplement the lectures. You can find the link on the course update webpage within the pdfs. Not sure if you already knew that or not…I hope that helps!

    I'm sorry to hear that, I've taken REG twice and have failed (71, 72 [with a week of half a$$ studying]) both twice.

    Are you using 2011 material?

    Good Luck, we'll both get it next time around!

    Here's the other YouTube video:

    Also, the course updates can be found by visiting the main page within the Becker software and clicking “Visit the Knowledgebase” link in the “Get Started” box. That will bring up an internet page where you can view course updates for each test section.
