Dumb Question

I just to REG on February 26th after studying for two months. Based on how the test went, I am positive that I will be retaking it. I studied for two months following the whole becker program and working all the questions, all final exams, all simulations, studied flash cards etc. After I had finished all that, I had time to take 4 of the 100 question simulated exams. I never felt so ready for an exam. However, when I took the exam, very little of what I studied was actually on the exam. My question is, what do I study now? Obviously all the time I put in was for nothing as much of what was on the test cannot be located in the Becker course.

Sorry to hear you feel like you failed. Although, feeling bad usually means good things with this exam. If the testlets seemed hard, they probably were, which probably means you were doing pretty good on the exam. I actually felt like Becker did a good job of preparing me for REG. If you are already working on another section of the exam go with that and see what the score comes out in March is like.

I thought Becker was awesome for the other three parts of the exam since I was able to pass all three on the first try. This one however was different in that I thought there were some parts of the exam, specifically the simulations, that I didn't feel Becker prepared me for very well. After I finished the exam I went through the book looking for places that could have helped me prepare better. I was unable to find much that would have helped me prepare. That is why I am at a loss as what to study for.

Yaeger CRAM. I heard good success with that. I have a friend who passed all 3 other parts with Becker, and failed REG with becker twice. He bought Yaeger CRAM, and passed on his next try.

Becker + Yaeger CRAM is definitely one way to pass.

Ha ha, you sound like one of their advertisements on their website. Just kidding, thanks for the tip, I have never heard of Yaeger before. I am willing to try anything to finish these exams.

I am far from an advertiser for Yaeger.. spend enough time on this forum. most people here use Becker or Yaeger.

I felt that Becker prepared me well for the mcqs but left me hanging for the sims.

Not a dumb question. I felt like Becker inadequately prepared me for REG after I took it, but I passed.

The simulations have changed on the exams and Becker does not reflect the new format. I guess the simualtions used to be a situation tab and the other tabs pertained to it. Now each tab is a mini-monster.

I've seen both types of sims. On REG I had one sim that referred back to the situation tab for each part (including written and research) while the other had nothing on the situation tab and each tab was independent.

I also used Becker and felt a bit under prepared but somehow managed to pass REG. So just from my own experience, I would say to wait for your score because you very well may've passed.

IMHO if your score was anywhere close to passing, I wouldn't worry about the material. I'd just focus on your technique and your approach to the exam.

    FAR - 78
    AUD - 86
    REG - 77

Not really sure I know people who used Becker from 2009 and passed the 2010 REG in the 90's, so obviously becker worked for them but maybe you should try a different program or not study for 2 months as this is probably way too long.

I don't understand what you mean when you say that studying for 2 months is way to long. This was the amount of time I needed to get through all the lectures, questions, flash cards and time for review. How long do you suggest studying for?

agbc – Remember, Becker claim is that it only teaches what is most likely to be on the exam. I took REG on Feb 2 and felt Becker prepared me sufficient for this exam. Do you think you memorized questions instead of learning concepts. I know this can be a problem for some individuals with Becker. When you work the multiple choice questions, do you tell yourself the concept that the question is trying to teach and try to figure out how the question can be ask differently. Even the straight up multiple choices can be ask multiple ways to see if the CPA candidate understands the concept. You know Becker or the AICPA throws those NOT or EXCEPT into the questions or answers that is only trying to confuse you in my opinion. When you missed a question did you read all the answers and hit the “show text” button and read the book section.

Also, I took longer than 2 months (Nov-Jan) although the holidays really put a crimp into my studying. Anyway, all this might be for not, since there is still hope you might have passed even though you feel like you failed. Good Luck.

I have both Becker and Yaeger for all four exams. I passed REG on the first try only studying taxation with Yaeger Home Study. I thought that Becker was weak on taxation compared to Yaeger.
