Did you study REG the same way you studied the other sections?

    Hey!

I’m stuck. I have no idea how to study for REG. I recently took and failed FAR and I’ve committed to put more hours in for REG but..I’m having a tough time remembering concepts and rules. I’m “studying” longer hours per day (around 4-7ish) but I’m just not getting it! Studying for FAR was, in a way, easier since I remembered most of the topics from undergrad so it was just a matter of refreshing that memory and doing questions. On the other hand, I didn’t do so well in tax and business law so I feel like I have to do more “learning” for this section. How did you guys approach it?

When I’m doing MCQs and really trying to understand them I sometimes take a long time..maybe over ten minutes and I panic and move on to the next one because I see the large amount of questions remaining that I need to cover to stay on track. I also start thinking, “Oh, this topic is tough but what if it doesn’t even show up on the exam? What if I could have used the time to study something else?” Some topics seem..less important because Gleim only has a handful of questions on them (maybe 7?) but the textbook reading is extremely long and detailed. But then again, if it’s included in the text, there’s still a chance that it might be on the exam-maybe as a SIM question.

I’m just stuck. I wish I could find that “formula” to apply to every chapter so that all I had to worry about was WHEN to study, not HOW.

Did anyone else feel this way?

Just feeling a bit down and lost about he CPA exam…

    But I won’t give up.

Apologies for any grammatical errors and such..it’s 5AM.

I'm also studying REG at the moment and struggling with a few concepts. I didn't do too well on the exam and I kinda know why. I chose not to read the book..instead I learned concepts from the MCQ, which can work for AUD or BEC but wasn't a good approach for REG. So what I want to advise you to do is read the book (as boring/dull as the material is), but this will help you understand the core of the concepts.

I would also tackle the concepts piece-meal. Read a chapter and do some of the MCQ to make sure u understand it…then take notes on incorrect MCQ, which will help learn the concepts better.

Glad to hear that you won't give up, that's definitely the right attitude for this beast. I also felt a bit down about this exam but it doesn't mean that we will let it win over us. Best of luck to u!!

I'm a financial accountant and I struggled with REG until I realized that it's not going to make sense – a bunch of non-accountants (Congress) created the Tax code. Once I got that into my head, I just realized that you have to memorize most of the stuff. Know Basis (for everything) and don't forget about Business Law/Ethics. You can do this!

I felt the same when I took REG. I just kept at it, and one day it finally came together and it all started making sense. Just hang in there, and you will get it too.

@rana cali I agree 100%. I tried using the same approach that I used on FAR and AUD and it didn't work for REG. I had a gut feeling that it wouldn't work either – probably due to the fact that I'm intimidated by REG and have a weak background in it.

What's your strategy for your retake?

    Thanks for the replies, guys!

That was my first post and it's a nice feeling to know that there are others out there going through the same things..

    🙂

    Good luck studying!

I learned most of the stuff by doing tones of MCQ. Write down what I have learnt, what is correct and that's the way I studied for REG

    REG - 80 (02/13/2015) Roger + Ninja Flash Card + Ninja MCQ + Becker's Note
FAR - 84 (05/29/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Some Wiley book questions
BEC - 77 (08/27/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions
AUD - 87 (08/28/2015) Roger + Ninja MCQ + Half Wiley book questions

I had the same issue with REG. I started out reading the text and quickly found out that I would have to cover a vast amount of information in just under 4 weeks. I pretty much took the advice from this post Jeff made a while back. The process definitely sucked but ended up paying off in the end.

@Blackhawk…this time around I will definitely read more of the text. I'll probably focus more on rewriting the ninja notes too and definitely do more MCQ. Although I felt like I did a lot to prepare for the exam I failed..I knew that it wasn't enough. So i will just give it the time it deserves this time around.
