If an individual does charitable work instead of donating to a recognized charity. what sort of expenses can be deducted? I understand that voluntary work is non-deductible but what about expenses such a fuel or parking receipts etc. would they be subject to 2% misc. itemized deduction?

@n.ACMA, the travel expenses, are deductible. There is a special mileage rate for travel for charitable purposes ($.14 per mile). You may also deduct actual expenses (fuel, parking, tolls). Page 5 of Publication 526 is a good reference:

They are not misc. itemized deductions. You can take the full amount for charitable contributions.
