Annoying people at work

Alright, I know Jeff has posted something about the differences between the cpa exam 30 years ago and the test as it is now. I understand when old accountants tell me,” Oh, you have it so easy now because you can study just for one part as opposed to taking all of them at once.”

Well, I have this co-worker, who has been working at my firm for the past 35 years. Never graduated highschool, but she’s been working there so long so she thinks she knows everything there is to know about tax. Anyway, the day before I took REG, she says good luck tomorrow and then she starts going on and on about how easy I have it now and that back in the day, it was much harder. My question to you guys is, how do you guys usually deal with people like this? I know I have friends that don’t really understand why I have to study so long, but a co-worker who says stuff like that, I don’t know. Anyway, sorry for the rant.

Tell them they are “So right”! That person will love you forever because you made them feel important for a moment! haha. Who cares if they think you have it easier or harder… there is something wrong with them, so they have to make it a point!

Your going to move on to bigger and better things! 🙂 It's okay 🙂

Yeah, it was just annoying hearing it the day before I took REG. Thanks for the response. Now it's onto BEC! woohoo.

I know how you feel. The night before I took REG a couple weeks ago, my boyfriend and I were talking about the test and everything and he made a comment like, “I bet I could take a whole week to study for the test and pass it”. I was furious! It was like he was undermining all the weeks and weeks I put into studying with that comment. He explained that he meant that he usually can cram for tests for hours and pass them, and I had to try and explain that even if he did that, it would still be near impossible to pass. I get frustrated that he doesn't understand this and can't comprehend how much time truthfully needs to be put into it. People underestimate the difficulty of the exams and it is very frustrating when they don't get this.

When people at work say we have it easier, I usually reply with, “yeah, yeah, and you also had to walk to school in the snow, uphill both ways, without shoes.” They usually laugh and leave me alone.

lol. My mom and my friend said the same thing. They are always like just take it already will you, and I am always I want to be as prepared as possible. (Intend to pass all 4 one my 1st try and be done with it)…

CPA is not that hard to be honest, it just just cover a lot of materials. You make progress day by day…

Glad that my mom lives 12 hours away lol.

Yeah, back in the day when there was no such thing as derivatives, off-the-balance sheet financing, or computers, for that matter. I doubt many of them could pass again today!

    I really can't pass again!

    “CPA is not hard”

So this is a frustrating comment for me.. i think its great that people have no problems with the exam. I know people who have passed each part on the first try. Its awesome for them, however, the people i know took off an entire year of work to do this. Now if I did not have to work 60+ hours a week and I did not have school, other job related certifications, and a husband, then think I could pass on the first try too. Also If you dont have the money to spend on review courses and you are stuck with just a book this makes it more difficult. So if you think its easy, then great but in general I would not say that it is not a hard is exam. The pass rates contradict this.

As for the old people saying how lucky we are, I just ignore it. I mean i have made comments explaining that the exam is adaptive but in the end they are going to believe what they want..

That is just my opinion 🙂

OP (aka Mdcpa), you may check this topic too: “Stupid things said by coworkers, relatives or friends regarding the CPA Exam”. In a way, it's a great stress reliever 'cause you see that lots of people deal with similar insensitive comments.
