AMT – How badly do I need to know this?

    Hello All –

My REG test is Feb. 27…joy.

But how badly is AMT (Corporate and Individual) on the test? I know we can’t divulge what’s on the test, but some helpful (confidence boosting) comments would be appreciated.

Obviously, corporation/individual/partnership taxes are heavily tested, and I’m trying to understand AMT then AMTI and pre-ACE and ACE adjustments. I’ve rewritten the formula several times and what exactly the adjustment/preferences are but it never seems to click. I’m not sure how everyone else is working on it, but any helpful hints/comments/mnemonics would be great! I get the other concepts (for the most part), but AMT, AMTI, and pre-ACE just doesn’t work for me. I’m worried it is going to be a huge part of the SIMS (which suck already..ugh!), so I’d like to some basic concept on how folks get to each of the AMT, AMTI, pre-ACE, and ACE answers…

I’ve done all the questions on Becker and Wiley and I think I’ve just memorized the answers so I get them right, but I don’t have a good concept of what it actually is or how to get there.

    Dazed and Confused,

    Jessi G

You will need to know AMT. Do you have the NINJA notes? Jeff does an awesome job of breaking down AMT.

Because you fear AMT you will see tons of questions. In reality probably not, but because you fear it every question will seem like it's talking about AMT. The NINJA notes and audio provided a lot of help for me with REG. Jeff has a 15% coupon code right now.

I'm sorry I can't provide some reassurance that it will not be tested or tested lightly.

This is a great post. Do folks recommend focusing on the Corporate AMT or the Personal AMT? As far as Becker HW questions, I don't think they asked any questions on Corporate AMT. Not sure if I should bother studying or just focus on Personal. Any advice?

I struggled with AMT too… it's a tough area. I would try googling AMT and reading some articles or other types of literature about it. Sometimes reading about a topic in laymans terms can help remember it better. I did this alot with sections in REG.

The best advice someone ever gave me was to imagine the one area that would be your worst nightmare to get a simulation for on the exam. Now make sure you do whatever it takes to understand it before test day!

    F- 7/13- 84
    R- 10/13- 79
    A- 11/13- 99
    B- 1/14- 86

    Licensed in PA- 3/20/2014

This exam ALMOST defeated me back in 2006-2008, but I came back and WON!

If I remember correctly, Jeff didn't pass REG until he learned AMT….I agree that Ninja audio/notes will help you to understand it better. Also taking on the 27th!!

Not to disclose anything but those things usually appear in a gigantic SIM. Don't go to the exam unprepared. If you can, reschedule until you're absolutely ready.

    CPA - Since 2015
    CISA - Smashed 2012
    CIA - Passed 2015
