This is my first time looking at AMT and I’m confused with Adjustments and Preferences?

What’s the difference between the two? How are they treated? What are they?

Any kind of description or explanation would be great, the simpler the better. I’ve accepted the fact that I will probably get the AMT questions wrong if they happen to pop up on the exam, but I would like to know what they are in general.
