I updated my Becker REG book with their updates for 2011, and on pg R2-39 they say that you can take the American Opportunity Credit for expenses paid in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Becker also said that for 2011 the phase out begins at MAGI = $51,000 for singles and $102,00 for MFJ.
I looked this up on the IRS website, and their site says that the AOC can only be taken for expenses paid in 2009 or 2010. And that phase out begins at 80,000 and 160,000 (as Becker’s text said originally). I’m confused on which is right! The IRS page was updated in June 2011. I’m assuming the IRS is correct. Can any one clear this up for me?
