Advice on REG

I am about to start studying for REG. I am amazed at how thick the Wiley book is…what are the areas that i should place most focus on? I see persons saying that nothing comes on the business law segment and i am finding that hard to imagine since it seems to take up more than half of the book…although given my experience with BEC i would not be surprised if the things that worry me when i begin studying are the things that don’t end up on the exam…advice anyone?

While there are quite a few law questions, I don't think the ratio is 60/40 like the AICPA claims.

One thing I regret not doing is spending more time reviewing the actual tax forms. I think that would have helped quite a bit with both MCQ's and SIMS. If I have to take it again, that is part of my plan of attack.

    Good luck!

Quickest way to fail = Dont study BLAW

Look, your book is thick because everything contained in that book is fair game to be tested on the exam. Refer to the CSO for REG to get a better understanding of the breakdown of each topic. If you want to cut corners, focus on the areas that make up the highest percentages of the exam. Just dont come back crying after the exam that they tested the “exceptions” or the “fringe areas” of the book. It is all fair game and I suggest you devote the time to learn it all.

Dont get overwhelmed by the amount of material. Just methodically make your way through the material, chapter by chapter, and you will give yourself a pretty good shot. Good luck.

Seriously. Study it all. The first time I “studied,” I skipped a bunch of stuff and failed horribly.

Study b-law and tax, and dont forget ethics/professional conduct. I think b-law is only 20%, but ethics, SEC stuff, professional conduct etc. is another 15-20%, if I'm not mistaken. There were two topics that I was weak on/didn't like. I considered skipping them. Instead, I reviewed them extra. Had 3 sims on those topics… passed.

If you are getting overwhelmed by all the verbiage on the b-law stuff, get the ninja notes. They are a great summary that helps cut through to the main points.

    REG- 53, 91
    BEC- 88
    FAR- 62, 85
    AUD- 85

    Ethics- 93

Study everything as if they are going to be tested on the exam. You never know how your specific exam will be tailored. It's different for everyone.

Someone might claim they only got 1 question on BLAW and 71 on taxation. Someone else might say the opposite. And thousands of others in between.

My REG exam I took had A LOT of “ancillary” material on it which Becker says has a low probability of being on the exam…yet I had a lot of it.

    So study everything.

    FAR: 87
    AUD: 86
    BEC: 86
    REG: 84! Officially Done!

I feel like REG harped A LOT on odd topics. USE WILEY, AND DO TONS OF MCQS!!!! Use the option that ensures you get questions you haven't seen once you start to memorize answers.

Like Kind Exchanges will be on there.

SIMS will be hard, but I passed REG without a lot of time spent practicing SIMS. I used the WILEY test bank, NINJA Audio, and CPA4Free.

    REG 8/31/12 Passed: 80
    FAR 1/10/13 Passed: 82
    BEC 4/4/13 Passed: 77
    AUD 5/28/13 Failed: 71 WTF?????
    AUD 7/11/13 Passed: 81
    ETHICS Passed: 93

    DONE!!!!!

I did ALL mcqs on Wiley, and ALL mcqs on Becker. Don't skip anything. Just don't. REG sucks, but it's passable!

I think Jeff said it best when someone asked how he did it…he said he failed many times because he never felt the need to strengthen his weak areas. Not in those extact words.

I can attest to that truth. It was always one area that I just didn't take the time to nail down and that area was always my downfall. Study it all and focus on weak areas. Business law is important and a good portion of the test.

    FAR Passed
    REG Passed
    AUD Passed
    BEC Passed

All aboard, this train's leaving. Next stop, TBD!

To me..it felt like 80% tax and 20% Blaw. Like everyone has said, know your stuff and don't cut corners. I was weak in estate/trust/property and decided to blow it off. Comes test day, what do you know, I get questions on those areas and also on the sims. Someone up there was trying to teach me a lesson hence my failing score.
