Just got back from REG, failed REG in november by getting a 74.

1st MCQ – Super Easy, or so I thought, breezed through it real fast ~25 min. It had a couple of questions that were out there that I assumed were pretest because you would need to harness the power of google to figure them out because they were so specific and super obscure scenario related. Lots of simple business law/ethics, and basic straight forward calculations for the most part.

2nd MCQ – Pretty easy again, not very wordy like I expected with a bump of difficulty because I felt like I knocked the 1st part out of the park with the exception of a few questions. Finished ~25 min. I expected I must have gotten a lot wrong in the 1st part to still be getting questions that were 2-3 sentences in length again. There were a few calculations that made me think that it might have been hard due to their length, but I don’t know because I still found them very easy once you dug through the body of useless misinformation.

3rd MCQ – If this is what a hard testlet is so supposed to be, then I know I must have done poorly of the first section. Took me a long time ~50 minutes. Lots of obscure theoretical stuff, long calculations, and calculations on stuff not tested in Wiley or Gleim (I did every second question in both books at least twice, along with tons of questions on their software) . I feel that I did alright on this one, this one took me the longest of the two previous ones combined. Although I guessed on a lot of questions, but was able to narrow them down to two.

Overall Impression of Sims: Significantly toned down a from 2011, even easy by most CPA test standards.

Sim 1 – Pretty easy, I know I got the majority of it correct with a few answers being educated guesses. I had a feeling that this question may have been screwed up by the test maker because there was nothing to respond to with a key fact in the question. Second hardest question on the simulation part in my opinion.

Sim 2 – Research, found it in seconds. Easiest research question I’ve ever had.

Sim 3 – Felt like this question should have been on FAR, but pretty sure I got most of it correct barring a few details because the question was so vague on the treatment it wanted for one part.

Sim 4 – Easiest non-research question I’ve ever had on the CPA exam. Got a 100% on it without a doubt.

Sim 5 – Really weird way of asking a question that’s commonly asked, even weirder in how they wanted you to answer it. I felt I did okay on this, with it being hit or miss. The majority of it was educated guesses, with only one part I know that I nailed. Definitely the hardest question by a mile.

Sim 6 – Another easy sim, there may have been one part I got wrong because I’ve never seen in asked in any practice questions or sims, and couldn’t find anything referencing it in the research tab. I took my best educated guess on it, but I know I got the majority of it correct.

Finished with 17 minutes to spar, looked over my sims but I didn’t want to second guess myself. I have a tendency to change my correct gut answers with wrong answers. Walking out of the test, and reviewing some material, already I know for a fact that I got 5 questions wrong on the MCQ, which had me worried with my previous test being a 74. I don’t know how I did. I assume that I did comparable-stronger on the sims, while being all over the place on the MCQs; which was the exact opposite how I felt last time I took it.

Solid recap there. From my experience I couldn't ever tell if I failed or passed but from what I've read I think you have a solid shot at that 75.

I'm in the same situation as you, failed in November and re-taking tomorrow. Last exam I thought I killed the MCQs and simulations were absolutely awful. Ended up w a 72. My Becker ran out in November so Ive been studying with Roger CRAM and Wiley Test bank. Ended up using a friend's laptop from work to take a Becker final, got 64/75/80 then about a 80-85% on Sims.

From previous exams that I didn't pass on the first try, FAR/AUD had similiar (if not exactly the same) MCQs and simulations. Was this the case for you at all with REG? Feeling alright about this test tomorrow and your experience alleviated some anxiety.

    Best of luck

Glad to hear it went fairly well for you. I'm taking REG on 2/28 so I'll be really curious as to how you did with your score. If possible, update the thread so we can see the results. I hope I feel this confident after this brutal section.

    @40Gloc,

I totally agree with Chef–thanks for the detailed recap. I think you overall had a good experience, especially on the sims. And it seems like the sims is what most people struggle with. Well, that was what I struggled with last time I took REG and got a 72. I am sitting in February, so it is good to read your post. Thanks so much!!

    @Chef

Best of luck to you tomorrow!!!

I don't believe anything has changed since 2011. For one, the AICPA hasn't had time to adjust any questions…you're basically taking the same exam as last year. Maybe you prepared more, or were more comfortable with the material but nothing is really ‘toned down.' Sounds like you passed, but probably not because it was a 2012 exam compared to 2011.

    FAR - 68, 79
    AUD - 82
    REG - 71, 71, 80
    BEC - 76

    Part 2: January 2014

I took REG on 1/21 I (hesitantly) agree with your assessment – I don't know if I should cry or be slightly excited.

I took REG on 1/6 and your description was almost exactly like mine, down to how many minutes I had left at the end (maybe I had 24 or so, though.) First was easy, second wasn't really any harder but had more calculations, third was really hard.

One of my sims was crazy weird, but I *think* I was able to figure it out. I think all the research sims are easy, so that was no surprise. Research is my thing, though.

I'm afraid that I failed and just don't realize it, KWIM? If I did, I would just take it again, and I know what I would spend more time studying (2 things in particular – one of which was barely touched on in my review course.)

    We'll see…..

    REG - 89
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 87
    AUD - 81
Used CPAexcel, Wiley Online Practice, and NINJA!

My REG exam on 1/20 was the opposite. First testlet was medium, spent 30 mins on it. Second testlet was hard and I spent 45-50 mins on it. The third testlet was even harder, I was only able to answer half and guessed the other half leaving me with only 45 mins to take my simulation. On all testlet, I had about 40% on taxation and 60% on Law and over half of the Law questions weren't even covered in Becker.

I can't completed 100% any of my simulation except for research because I run out of time. They had really long information that I had to digest as well as complicated calculations. I had massive headache after the test. My first REG exam back in July 2011 was sooooo much easier and I score 73. I regret that I did not spend the 20 mins or so that I had left to go over my simulation again because I was so confident I nailed them. I passed all the other 3 exams on my first try and REG was supposed to be piece of cake since I had tax experience before. I have a strong feeling I need to retake the exam in April or May.

    AUD – 79

    FAR – 79

BEC – 76 (hardly study because I was sick and my NTS was expiring)

REG – 73 (Retake 1/20 – may fail the exam eventough I was so prepared)

@40Gloc- I felt the same way as you did when I got my 74. After I reviewed the material after the exam, I found out that I got around 4-5 MCQs wrong, one of which I changed to the wrong answer because I was doubting my initial gut instinct. *slaps self*

But I still felt that wasn't too bad since it was only 4-5 out of 72 questions. I don't think I got less than 20 correct per testlet. But had I gotten those 4-5 questions right, I would've passed. I really screwed it up last time because I got one of the easiest sets of MCQs and I still couldn't make it. I don't know if I'll be so lucky next time to get easy MCQs. The fact that I felt I got at least 20 MCQs correct per testlet and only ended up “Comparable” instead of Stronger, it really shows that you need to be a real tax expert to pass this. The other 3 sections did not require such expertise. I'm willing to bet that my performance on my last FAR exam was a lot worse than my last REG exam. Don't be fooled by my 89. I didn't do that well. It's just curved a lot more.

    So, I PASSED!

    81 on Reg

    Comparable on MCQ

    Stronger on Sims

I can give a more detailed breakdown if needed, but after today I'm outta here for good because I am DONE WITH THE CPA

how did you find out that you were comparable on MC and Stronger on sims? is there a way to check that?
