200 hours?

    I’m guessing it will take me 200 hours to study REG. I’m 35 hours in on my self-study (doing MCQs & Sims) and probably another 10 hours of reading material and taking notes thus far.

    Thoughts? What is sufficient for all you REG passers?

    I think the important thing is not the time you put in to study or try to score above75. If the exam is just about the hours you study, i think everyone can easily passed it. Just quit your job and do 800 hours and you will become a CPA. it is wat you get out with those studying hours. I made that mistake and I think you can take a good lesson out of it. 100 solid hour with no distraction, phone, facebook, twitter, tv, or internet is the same with 200 hours studying when you spend more than half of the time doing something else besides studying…:-) that is all I can tell you. When I pass all mine, wish i can give you better advice.

    I agree with Ken but it also depends on how well you absorb the material as well as your current tax experience. Someone who works in tax or has had more classes in tax probably won't have to put as much effort into it as someone who hasn't had those opportunities. I put in about a solid 100 hours or so for REG and passed. There were several topics I still was unsure of but did the best with the time I had (just under 4 weeks). Quality over quantity. If this is your first exam, shoot for at least 20 hours of solid study per week and leave the final week before the exam to hammer tons of MCQ. Best of luck!

    I was fortunate enough that I didn't have to invest as much time as some.

    I probably spent:

    BEC- 40-50 hrs.

    AUD- 30-40 hrs.

    REG- 65-75 hrs.

    FAR- 120-130 hrs.

    I couldn't tell you how long I studied for REG, but I can almost bet it was under 60 hours. That includes writing out flashcards, running flashcards and doing the test bank/questions in the book. However, I have a strong tax background and absorbed the business law part fairly quickly, so I didn't need to spend nearly as much time on this exam as others did. If you are in a similar situation, 200 hours should be way more than enough to pass the exam. However, if you are new to tax, you might need 150-200 hours.

    I will echo everyone else though – quality over quantity!

    It's not really about the # of hours as much as it is about the # of EFFICIENT hours. I wasted a lot of time before I learned the best study methods for myself. Read the book, work the book MCQ, take notes on what I missed, hit up a test bank hard until exam day making sure I focus on my weak areas while refreshing myself on my strong areas. If you know how you learn best it probably won't take you 200 hours. Make those hours count and don't focus on the time, but on what you are accomplishing during that time.

    I never kept track of hours studied. I have no idea. I don't care.

    Make sure you know the material well enough to pass.
