I just paid for the exam fees. I have no tax experience outside of a basic tax class I took in college. I will probably be studying about 10 hours a week or so (will increase it to 15 two weeks before the exam). I did fairly well on bec studying for 7 weeks averaging about 15 hours a week on that as well (still waiting on score)

for those that have no tax background and managed to pass with an 80+, please give me your advice. thanks

First question to you: What material are you using for review?

Second: Did you recently take a business law course and do you remember a decent portion of it? It's hard not to get caught up with business law because, at least is the case with Becker, it covers half of the provided literature. However, in the AICPA's exam material breakdown they estimate business law to make up 20% (rough guess) of the test and they mean it. I was surprised how few business law questions they asked on the exam, even though Becker's REG course is about 40-50% law.

I think 10 weeks is enough but you might need to find more study hours. I dunno, that depends on how you learn. For the tax chapters, I would work hard at memorizing the tax rules and then drill the questions hard. Memorizing the rules and knowing how the questions are asked is paramount, IMO. (well obviously, duh, but I mean that lectures and re-reading the book are much less effective)

Business law and other stuff I found easier, similar to econ and IT on BEC, just go through it once well and after that you're probably better off spending time on the harder stuff. I had no tax experience before starting the Becker course. Everything I know about tax, I know from there.

    Good luck.
