SIMS are worth 40% of your score.

Possible points 99 *40% = 39.6 possible points to earn on SIMS

AUD and FAR each have 7 total SIMS one of which is pretest.

So on average the 6 SIMS that have value are worth 6.6 points each.

You can pass if you miss one.

REG has 6 SIMS one is pretest

So, 5 SIMS average 7.92 points each.

You can still pass if you miss one.

Yeah I think people miss the research question all the time and still pass. I dont think they are valued the same as every other SIM. My theory is that it is worth maybe 2 points of your exam. I think SIMS are graded based on how many things you have to put down. For research, you have like three boxes you usually need to fill out so Im sure they are worth less in comparison to others. Thats why I dont think the people who get two research questions on their exam should be jumping up and down. You may get those, but the other SIMs are so valuble now. If you mess one up or dont understand what one is asking and have to guess, then you're in deep trouble. You can afford to miss your research question. I was told that you should always save your research question last to ensure you've had the time work on the other more valuable ones first.

@MCLKT- the math makes sense but I don't think each one is given the same weight. #4 on the AICPA website FAQ section of grading the exam states “…reported score is a scaled value that takes into account both the response to and the statistical characteristics of each question administered.” Furthermore, “The statistical characteristics are generated when the questions are administered as pretest questions and used in the scoring when the questions are operational. The formulas for generating the statistics and scoring the Exam come from a scoring approach commonly referred to as ―Item Response Theory.” The way I understand IRT is that each weight is based the response of each examinee of a given ability to each item in the test. It sounds like this is the whole purpose of pretest questions. If it's based off of responses from test takers in a certain “given ability” scale then how where they graded to begin with? I think this raises the “chicken or egg first?” question.

Of course, none of us lowly candidates are blessed with the knowledge of which questions are worth more or less, and we surely aren't given the weights applied to different questions whether they are MCQ or SIM.

You seemed to be desperate for some sort of answer, so I responded with averages.

If anything, I would agree with Sammy's logic that the research sim may be worth less.

Why would you think you would fail the exam if you missed the research? I think it took so long for anyone to respond because it seems like a silly question. Of course you can miss the research and still pass. Or you can miss a different sim, multiple sims, multiple MCQs, and still pass. Asking yourself questions like this will only drive you bonkers. Just study, study, study, and focus on the material, not the way it's graded. Because in the end, if you really know your stuff… you will pass.

There are multiple threads that discuss this topic. Some theorize the research sim is graded 1-2 points per box. Who knows?

@MCLKT – Thank you for your response. In the past I haven't been this worried; I think it's because this is my last test and possible last one forever. I didn't mean to bother anyone with my silly question but sometimes it's easier to ask and get responses then read posts for hours upon hours. I was just a little steamed over getting the only research question I've ever not been able to find on a test where I've felt I did good on the rest of the test. I'll take your advice and stop worrying because truly you never know with the CPA exam and I've found that you can't rely on how you feel when you leave the testing center. I think this is the one place you can go to ask silly questions or maybe just get what your thinking off your chest to relieve some stress and anxiety to get other peoples points of view.

I want to know, how can you NOT miss research question. I mean, in Becker, I am close to the actual answer, but not always. it seems easy, but difficult. Since there are 3 boxes, and lets say, I get first two correct, and missed the last one. do they say, its ALL incorrect or partial credit.

Yeah and the exam research are harder than Becker to find. Good point I wonder if they do give partial credit, cause I think I got the right IRC code just maybe not the sub letter. Hopefully they do!

Hate to break it to you friends… I am pretty sure it's all or nothing on research problems. There was another thread about this I read that said they go sure don't do partial credit. I think it's so unfair! Especially on audit when you have like ten AL's to pick from! Good luck though and I'm sure you did fine 🙂
