Hi All,

I just got my second failed score for Reg this week (69, 71). I studied using Roger CPA the first time and a combination of Roger and Surgent the second. This is my last exam and my AUD score expires in July so I am looking to take the exam some time in May. I knew Reg would be my toughest exam because I just don’t get tax so I saved it til the end… But now I am so close to losing a credit because of it!

I am looking for recommendations of any study materials or strategies that have helped folks in my position. Thanks in advance!

@ Kalexo- I am an international student with no US tax background.I used Roger as my primary study material and supplemented it with Ninja MCQs. Initially I found it very difficult to understand the taxation laws. But MCQs made the concepts and laws very clear. I studied one tax chapter then followed with one business law chapter and so on. I will suggest you to do as many MCQs and sims as you can.

Ninja MCQ and SIMS were great as a supplement. i would also have an honest assessment of what you don't know. That's what I had to do when I failed FAR and it helps to have an honest conversation with yourself in order to make your study time as productive as possible.

I failed reg twice with a 69 both times and my far was expiring soon so I feel your pain. I got the ninja mcq to supplement my becker for the 3rd try and got an 81. But I think the most important thing was looking at the report sheet to see where I did weak and really dig down deep in those areas. Like really learn all that material and not just try to memorize as much as possible.

Completly agree with @anyatver that deep down, you know which parts of the material you're weak on and that you're avoiding. I would buy the Roger cram course book and read it literally cover to cover and answer all the questions at the back of each chapter and you should pass if you put the work in. That's how I passed it on the first try, I know after the regular course I was so overwhelmed with the material, I needed a “refresher” before the actual exam.

Look at AICPA blueprints. Anything marked “analysis” is fair game for a SIM.

I failed REG 3 times before passing, and if there was anything positive to be gleaned from that, it was that I found myself becoming more and more relaxed during the exam because I was so familiar with it. Eventually it was just “ok here we go again…bring it b****.” I think part of that was also due to keeping my study approach consistent, i.e. building on what I already knew.

@kalexo I feel your pain. I have been where you are. I failed REG three times before passing on the fourth attempt. Scores: 66, 67, 70, 77.

I used Becker, primarily, but I supplemented with:

Becker Final Review (strongly recommend to use some sort of condensed final review after your regular course. I'd think most study “courses” offer something like that.)
Becker Flash Cards
Ninja Notes
Ninja MCQ
Ninja Audio

Ninja Audio opened the door to allowing me to study anytime/anywhere. I used to have about a 1.5 hour (round trip) commute each day for work, and it was great to learn/study while I wasn't in a position to read a textbook.
