Took Reg today. Felt like the rest of the exam sections. Got a few wrong. Got a few right. Felt like I got pounded by a few Sims and knocked a few out of the park. If I have learned anything from taking this exam. There is absolutely no way of guessing at results… Just gonna chill and probably forget a ton of tax rules over the next 10 days!

Seemed like the usual with MCQ but with a few things I hadn't seen before…no big deal with an educated guess. However, the SIMS were a different story. I'm confident on the research problem but that's about it. I'm sure I'll be doing a retake but at least I know what to expect.

FAR - ughSeptember 4, 2016 at 6:29 pm #829530SomeSomeCPAParticipantTook REG on Sat the 3rd. Nothing was over the top. I knew going into the test that I didn't have all the tax rules as locked down as I would of liked. Assuming I'll come up just short and retake early Oct.

REG: SeptemberSeptember 5, 2016 at 8:32 am #829677xkc5ParticipantTook REG on Sat.. Felt like I was knocking it out of the park on MCQ but spent the better half of the evening afterwards looking up concepts I felt iffy on.. Turns out I got 7 wrong and those were just the ones I remembered. The MCQ didn't go as deep as I had studied so I slipped on many higher level questions which were so easy it was like always the first line in the Notes, for example.
Exam was worded so very vaguely, for example cash was exchanged in a transaction but there was no way of knowing which direction the cash went so we just assume what we normally see in studying. Also in the SIMs it was unclear how it was to be filled in one, but then in another they were nice enough to say “make all numbers positive”
SIMS were a nightmare, besides the research thankfully. No DRS for me.
I was trending at 96, 100% completion in MCQ and CPAexcel and used the notes and audio like crazy.. But personally think I just got really bad luck of the draw on my SIMs and blanked on easy questions because I was burned out and over-studied. Fully prepared for a retake, but I felt like this after FAR and got an 82. All lies in the SIMs scoring curve..

First testlet was hard, second was a lot harder then third testlet was not as hard as the second testlet. My simulations were a lot of doable as compared with my two previous attempts. Or maybe because I studied so much this time including the small details. I don't know but I felt confident with this retake because of the simulations given to me.
I am praying for a passing score on September 20, 2016, 9am UAE time.

This time I switched to Gleim test prep + simulations. My approach was to really go back to the book before attempting the mcqs. Then I strive to reach 75 average for each study unit before proceeding with the next study unit. I knew I understand the concepts when I had a lot of AHA moments. I also made sure that I know the small details. I printed the tax forms, studied them and quickly went through them before going in. Lastly, I intentionally scheduled this retake on the last few days before the window closes so it gives me a lot of time to study. On previous attempts, I always wanted to be part of the first wave of score release. lol
@Ski – Came across with a lot of advice here in this forum and I applied it to myself. Some of those are – print the tax forms, study them, you will learn a lot from them. Print AICPA release questions and go over them. Go over the AICPA sample test. Print and study AICPA Statements on Tax Services. Familiarize https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26 for the research sim. Know the small details, those items that you've seen one or two questions only in the entire test bank. They will give you a sim or two on those small details.

I appreciate your feedback! Hope all goes well you for on release day.

October 7, 2016 at 11:14 pm #854697jpowell31ParticipantSo this is my second round (this CPA try anyway…another story). my first round had me feeling literally like i studied for the wrong exam; testlet 1: wtf. testlet 2: wtf. testlet 3: oh, just so you know, you haven't been doing well, as evidenced by these absurdly easy questions peppered with more WTF is this…? SIMs: HAHAH WTF BRO. i knew i failed. most times you walk out thinking i just don't know how i did…. but didddd i know. scored in the 60's.
ANYWAY. i retook it today. i was definitely more confident going in this time but can't say i studied new or different material, or that i ironed out the issues i knew i encountered last time. in fact i spent almost an entire day devoted to a couple topics on my first exam i'm still stumped about…which goes to show you how different these exams can be.
Today my testlets got harder, and SIMs weren't ridiculous but i recognized jusssst about every question. it's sad but, that to me, was a mini-win! ha. i flagged maybe 4, 6, 10(!) questions in MCQ testlets respectively but still so many tricks, i just don't know how i did. even if i did fail…i know with the questions i got, i was as “prepared”. some of it wasn't fair at all but i'm not sure how i would approach it differently if i have to retake again.
i DO know that after that last exam, i'm glad i didn't feel left in the dark this time and i DO know that people who tell you not to ‘worry about x, y or z topic because you'll mostly see A, B, and C…just breeze through the rest…' hasn't been dealt one of the god awful random exams you can get. there IS a bit of luck in what's served to you but you have to be prepared for it all..
