Anyone have advice for reg. I just started studying 1-2 weeks back after taking BEC. All i can say is wow. The material is on a different level compared to BEC. BEC was easy to practice for and learn imo because you could just practice questions and concepts. The concepts regarding law are totally over my head and I’m using the wiley book.

With reg, can someone just tell me what the main focus should be. I know you can’t go over what was on your exam but I imagine tax is something I should master for this exam? I have only put in 12 hours of studying but I honestly can’t see myself passing this exam the first time (business law was probably my worst class in college). I imagine taking becker or gleim classes would make learning much easier if I fail the first time correct? Thanks for any advice. I plan to try to hit 60-80 hours of studying in the next 2-3 weeks if i can.

If you think you need a Becker class to pass, why not just take it now rather than wait until you fail first. If you've only had one B-Law class in college and you did poorly, you're going to struggle on half the exam. I might even suggest a REAL B-Law class at a college or university in addition to the Becker program. The BLaw 2 class I took in my Master's program is probably the biggest reason I passed REG.

I think this thread may help you. I am in the same boat i started REG two weeks ago and it was omg for me. I completed Individual taxes as its one of the longest chapters and also most heavily tested from what I hear.

I found even thought i listen to the lectures and read the notes, but doing the questions I am learn much more and picking up on the concepts.

My understanding is that Business Law and Tax Law are pretty evenly tested, so I wouldn't go into the exam just counting on taxes to carry you through.

As to whether a class would help you or not, that depends on how you learn. I have seen people on here who have taken classes and failed a test 3 or 4 times, then turned to Wiley and lived out of that book, and passed it…others that did the opposite – used Wiley, failed, took a test, and passed with flying colors.

To determine which is best for you, my question would be: Have you ever attempted to learn something solely out of a book? If so, how did it compare to sitting in classes?

Also, don't give up after 12 hours of study. 🙂 Usually, when I read through the Wiley book, it all sorta swims…and then when I start reviewing, everything “clicks”. My main source of review is doing MCQs in the Wiley test bank, and to a lesser extent listening to the NINJA Audio. So, in the weeks that I read through the book, I don't understand the framework for anything. I start to worry that I'll never get it all to work together, then once I start doing random MCQs (like, not separated by topic), everything starts to come together. You might be that way or you might not be, but I wouldn't worry too much until you've been through the material completely!

It sounds like you have your exam scheduled for sometime in August. If you're worried about your ability to complete it, then you might think about moving it as late in August as you can…but if you work hard, you can pull this off, or at least give it a good honest shot. I've heard rumors that the standard recommendation is to study 100 hours for a CPA section, so you might want to sneak in some extra study time.

But Wiley has the information required to pass. And in the next month(-ish), if you give it everything you've got, you can learn a lot out of the book.

P. S. And like wizards said, if you think you need Becker etc, see if you can get them now instead of after failing it once. My point above was to not think that just because Wiley is a book, Becker will be better…but if you think the classes would be better for you, then go ahead and sign up for one and give it your all. 🙂

The Wiley book has the breakout of what content is tested and how heavily, I would definitely look over that. I am getting ready for my third attempt at Reg. I think the individual tax content is the easiest.

The topics that are heavily tested AND difficult to master are debtor-creditor, bankruptcy, commercial paper, corporate and partnership basis and distributions. They ask really detailed questions on these so you need to the rules for difference scenarios inside and out.

I did not think that Trust and Estate was was difficult, but I used to work in a Trust department so I think I know more about those topics than the average person.

Accountant responsibility and liability makes up a big chunk and is easy to learn but you can't blow it off because the rules aren't really intuitive.
