I’m a little scared to post this because I have a feeling I know what the response is going to be, but just want to get input. I took REG Wed and I legitimately think there is no way (just given the sheer weights allocated to the MCQs vs sims) that I passed. I’m pretty sure I rocked out the MCQ’s – not being boastful, but I doubt I missed more than five. However, I didn’t leave myself enough time for the Sims – I only finished two of the six sims — and I’m pretty sure I didn’t even get all of the ones I finished correct. Even if one of the sims I omitted was a pre-test, that’s only 2/5 sims completed. I’m generally a good standardized test taker – I passed BEC, AUD and the Bar exam the first time I took them. But I just wasn’t thinking strategically about the 40% allocated to sims. And when I did the sims on Becker, they were much easier and shorter, and only took me maybe 5-10 minutes per sim (I’ve since read that Becker sims do not prepare you). I know it’s almost impossible to predict, but does anyone think there’s a chance of passing if you only finished 2/5 sims? I couldn’t even put in guesses in the other sims.

Say you only missed 5 MC questions and that those 5 were pretest. That would mean you got 60% of the exam knocked out (not sure how realistic this really is, but it is coming from you and only you know).

If you did 2/5 sims, and they are spread out equally (each SIM is 20% of the overall 40%), you could take a maximum of 40% away from the SIMS. That means you could come away with 16% from the SIMS. If you got 100% of the MC and 40% of the SIMS, you would score a 76…

This is rough math, but there is a chance.

Thanks, Jason2345 – I've been trying to figure out a way to quantify it like that. Even after reading the white paper the AICPA put out about how the exams are scored, it seems pretty much impossible to estimate how the individual sims (or the questions within each sim) are weighted. They say that both the MCQ section and the Sims are graded individually and then each is adjusted to a 0-99 scale and then weighted to get the aggregate 0-99 score. I guess I need to just try to put it out of my head until 8/22 – I think that's when the next release is. Thanks again 🙂

Also, it's not a straight percentage…so when they scale it, a 70% raw score might be a 85, or an 80% raw score might be a 70. It's all just guesswork. But it means you stand a chance, so cling to that! 🙂

Like Elisabeth said, it is all just guess work because they scale it, but there is definitely still a chance that you could pass. Using my example, there would be no way to get below a 76 if everything I mentioned occured, but your score could always be higher.

Either way, you know that you are capable of passing it. It isn't an issue of intelligence or effort. Just work on your time management and you will be good to go. Keep in mind, it is a marathon and not a sprint. Missing a MC question here or there is worth it if it gives you enough time to finish the entire exam. Keep in mind that some the harder MC questions could be pretest and that it is better to move on from something that you find oddly hard or new.

Good luck! If you don't get it this time, it sounds like you're set the next time around. Not what you want to hear, but it is the important part of it all.

Thanks to you both! I'm guardedly optimistic, but preparing myself to re-take. I do think you're right, Jason – I know I can pass it, just need to allocate time wisely. After all the standardized tests I've taken, you would think I would have remembered that – ha ha!
