Experience with REG

So I took reg on August 1 and found the test to be much easier than expected, especially easier than the fist few times I’ve taken it. I finished the test in just under three hours. I assume that I either passed or completely bombed.

What has everyone else’s experience been and should I be worried?

My second attempt for Reg was in June and honestly I left feeling unsure. But I did finish the exam with about 1.5 hours left – so I knew I either did pretty good or I absolutely bombed. Honestly, I always leave these exams feeling unsure or feeling like I didn't pass. If you finished early, it tells me you knew your stuff pretty well!

@Mick I felt the same way. There were still some random questions in my second testlet. But yea I finished with an hour left too. Thats how I am feeling now. Felt confident when I walked out…Now second guessing everything.

Now, that I’ve had almost two days to process the experience, I’ve also started second guessing everything. My confidence in how I did is slowly waning.

I took it on July 30th and felt this same way. Made me nervous because even on my second testlet I was being asked a lot of softball questions (definitions, very high level stuff). This is my third time taking REG. The first two were very difficult and I did not feel good at all leaving the exam and scored 73 and 74 respectively. This time I felt more positive but I know that is a bad sign with the CPA exam. I used Becker this time and the final review book really helped. I even noticed one of my SIMs was an exact one from my first attempt at REG. I am trying to focus on the fact that I only needed 1 or 2 more points but if it was an easier exam I don't like the idea of being stacked against strong candidates who may have scored in the 99s on this version. Praying for a passing score because I will be done if so.

@SereniityNow Yea, I used ninja, wiley, and the gleim test bank. There were of course a few that I was not 100% sure about in the MC. I have no idea if I got the harder testlet for the 2nd set of MC. Some items in the second testlet were weird or asked in a very random way. So not sure if that is pretest questions. I didn't think the sims were bad either. I missed my last REG exam by a 74 too and I studied really hard for this one and focused on my weak areas which were sims and Corps.

I had a lot of C Corp and partnership questions related to contributed property with some UCC stuff thrown in. I don’t recall having anything related to individual taxation. Also make sure you know the difference between realized and recognized gains or losses.

@Mick don't psych yourself out by second guessing your exam. That exam is history all you can do now is wait for the score. I didn't always listen to my initial gut response as I was leaving Prometric after every exam but it was remarkably accurate. Just keep moving forward and know you can do this. Either keep hitting REG till you get your score or start a new topic after having taken a real break. Good luck!

REG was my last one and I studied for it the most, by far. My final review for the others usually just consisted of reviewing notes I'd taken, putting together a sheet of formulas/important topics, and the simulated exams. But for REG I watched every Becker lecture again and retook many notes, in addition to that other stuff. Not sure if it's cause I work in audit and it naturally doesn't come that easy to me, or just all the rules, phase-outs and exceptions we have to keep straight.

I honestly couldn't gauge how I did when I took it. Definitely wasn't any sort of early celebration. I felt decent on all the topics going in, but it seemed like they tested a lot of it beyond what I learned from Becker, like I had a good basis for the question, but still had to make an educated guess on the answer.

I took the full 4 hours, but I think that's normal for me and exams; I also used the authoritative literature a LOT for other sims besides the research question – if you have the time, I found it really helpful to confirm phase-outs or tax treatment for entities/individuals.

Feels so good man, kinda surreal. I started studying right after graduation last year and only paused for busy season. I'm good on credits, and practically there with experience, coming up on a full year now. So with that and the ethics exam, and I'll be home free, apart from the CPE haha.

Good deal. If you are taking the AICPA Ethics exam see if your state board has discounts for it. CO does but I didn't find out until after I paid full price. You can download the pdf and search while you test but I suggest you watch all the video content and take the session tests before attempting the exam. It is a tricky little sucker that takes a while to get through. You have 3 attempts in most states for initial license and have to score 90 or above so don't mess around. It spins while scoring and even though the results are pretty fast there was still time for me to panic until it finished. I was so relieved to get it done in one shot. Worth the 5 hours I spent preparing.Check with your board is there is a limited amount of time in advance of your application for license to take the ethics exam. Some states will only accept a score received within so many days/months in advance of application. Some states don't even require it.
    Good luck!! Enjoy your accomplishments.
