Now that I’ve passed, I feel like I have a ton of free time on my hands that would best be spent towards accomplishing something else. Work is covered, I’m devoting more time to family and friends, but I still feel the need to keep learning. Is anyone else motivated for another certification? What cert is next?

December 2, 2013 at 2:05 pm #482530nbad311MemberMy company was running a discount on it so I purchased a one-year subscription to Rosetta stone's online learning software. I've only used it a few hours so far, as the Thanksgiving holiday took up about a week's time but I'm thinking I'll be using it more as the holidays die down.

Also, check out some adult community classes in your area. I might take a calligraphy class (I know… lame!) or finally learn how to use a sewing machine. Or cook.
Coursera and edX are free online courses. I started using Coursera, but then I couldn't keep the momentum.

December 2, 2013 at 3:01 pm #482531tough_kittyMember@Lilla, thanks for the info. I'll email them later to double check… Also, I don't think ALL CPA's would apply for this license, because:
1) Not everyone is as ambitious as some of us 😉
2) Some don't even know about this unless they search….I actually didn't know about this and I am surprised I missed it because I did search online a lot for stuff!
3) You still need relevant experience, althouth when I inquired about my work experience for the CMA, I was told that my experience would qualify, although in my mind my job has nothing to do with management or financial accounting…but hey, if they accept it, more power to me 😉
I think all of us worked hard to get the CPA, so being kind of awarded by also receiving a CGMA is a good thing 🙂 Also, they will start the exam after 2015, so with such a small window of opportunity, I wouldn't worry about everybody else getting this license….it also gets expensive, but I was going to pay for AICPA membership anyway, so I can get a discount on the CPE courses….so for me it would be just additional $100/year.
Thing is, I don't really need it….since I work for the state….but it's good to have 😉 With all other people getting their CPA too….

California CPA since 1/30/14December 2, 2013 at 3:42 pm #482533Whopper WarriorMember@neika – Caligraphy is not that lame, although I would look towards a michaels or a craft store as it may be cheaper / you can network more. I am trying to learn the Palmer Method before getting “fancy.” I have also looked into local CC classes but they are gearing towards professional trades (plumbing, carpentry, electircal, household maitnance, ect) but I am going to wait to see how busy, busy season truely is.
Honestly for other CERTs I feel like unless you are entering a managerial accounting position, going into fraud, or doing financial planning along with taxes at a small to mid size firm; they are nothing but letters besides your name. I would prefer my education to round me out and be more of an all trades then an “accounting, accounting, accounting”
I read a very intresting article about CFP's and CPA's and thier need to connet with their clients beyond taxes and wealth managmnet. Specifically it gave examples of professionals recommending doctors, construction crews, tree removal services, dry cleaning, resteraunts, ect ect ect; if they did not perform the services themselves. Just a thought on the blurring lines of our profession.

December 2, 2013 at 8:04 pm #482539tough_kittyMemberI emailed AICPA with some questions about CGMA, and got an auto-reply starting like this:
“Thank you for contacting the AICPA. Due to unusually high email volume, it may take in excess of 48 hours to respond to your request.”
Seriously? I'll be happy if I get a response within one week! 🙂
