I graduated high school in 1991 with a high GPA. School was easy for me. I went off to college to study accounting, and got placed on academic suspension after my first semester. It wasn’t a lack of brains, but a lack of discipline and drive that did me in. I went to work for the next several years, and was successful, but never gave up on my dream to be a CPA.
In 2009, I got reinstated at the same university I had been kicked out of. I earned my accounting degree in December, 2013, and passed all 4 sections of the CPA exam on my first try this spring.
The purpose of this post isn’t to blow my own horn. It is to encourage other non-traditional students (and others who have fallen flat on their butt in the past). Don’t give up! If you really want it, you can get it. It’s not easy, but nothing worth having is ever easy. Make a plan, set goals, and do it. The reward is more than worth the effort!
