I had graduated from college 16 years ago in my native country of Colombia, married to a wonderful husband that travels most of the time, have 3 children (ages 2, 5, 7) and was working during tax season.
My CPA story started back in August 2012 when I bought the Becker preparation course, but I had no idea how to navigate the jungle of the “CPA exam” I was told to pay all 4 parts of the CPA and take them back to back in a period of 4 months.
REG was my first test in August 2012 and I got a 72. I was disappointed, but I thought, “hey, that was pretty close for a first try.” Well, little I did I know what was ahead on the road. Taxes was my area of expertise and where I have worked for several years.BEC came in early October and Ouch! I got 53!! I was so depressed and my head hurt from so much information: I was overwhelmed. Then, came the “beast” FAR. I took the test in November and I got 63. And finally, AUD in Feb 2013 and I got 67.
It was clear that I had taken all 4 parts of the CPA and failed every single one! I realized that the plan that the Becker representative laid out for me did not work.
I decided to take one test at the time and focus on it until I pass. I began with REG I took the Becker Final Review course and study hard for 2 weeks during tax season most of the knowledge was fresh in my mind and I PASSED my first CPA test with 76! Then, it came AUD again and failed it with 64. I decided to try BEC at the end of the test window and failed it with 65.
Around this time, I found another 71 blog and learned about Jeff’s notes and audio and decided to apply the Ninja philosophy of taking notes and re-writing notes I focused on BEC since it was the last test I had failed and I PASSED my second test with 77!.
It was the middle of the summer and I decided to take a break and spend the rest of the summer with my kids before they went back to school. By this point, one year had passed already and I had only passed 50% of the tests, but this journey had taken so much time away from my family and friends already that I had to keep going.
In October, I took AUD for the 3rd time. I rewrote my notes again worked MCQ, but I did not focus much time on the SIM and that was my mistake and failed again with 69! I was devastated with this result now, I have to wait until Jan 2014 to re-take it again during this time I had Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I was determined to pass it this time and I schedule my test for Jan 7th. I purchased Ninja Audio and listened to it everywhere I went in my car, washing dishes at night, etc. Jeff’s voice was in my head all of the time. Also, I purchased cpareviewforfree AUD SIM for $9 and it was money well worth it because I got my best score yet 91!
I had tax season ahead of me and the final CPA exam FAR. I started studying for it and schedule it early April. I went through the videos, took notes, MCQ, but I still did not have enough time to review the material before the exam I thought about reschedule it , but in the last minute I decided to stick to it and got my most painful score 74!!!
I was in pain I could not believe I was one point away to be done with this nightmare. Now, I had to go through another summer with my kids out school and my husband continuing traveling. I was under more pressure because this will be my last attempt to take FAR before my REG credit expired at the end of August.
I began studying again going through my notes. I purchased Ninja Audio and started listen to it everywhere I went again Jeff’s voice was in my head. Also, Cpareviewforfree FAR SIM for $9 and this time I left myself 2 weeks to review the material before my test on August 22nd.
Last September 8th, after a long day of NASBA crashed website at 10:30pm I checked the results of what I was hoping to be my last CPA exam. My husband was out of town so we checked it together using iPhone’s facetime. We prayed together before I pressed the button and then, here it was, I got a 79!
Finally, I was done! I thank God first and foremost, my husband, kids, family and friends that were there for me during this process especially the times that I failed. Their prayers and thoughts carrying me through this journey. I am glad that God gave me the courage to keep going and NEVER GIVE UP!
