It depends what state you're in. In California, after finishing the exams, we have to take the Ethics exam online. Then (or even before) you fill out your application for the license. Your firm also has to fill out a form confirming your experience.
You mail in:
1. Your completed license application
2. The firm's completed form (or they mail it)
3. A check for $250
The state receives everything else electronically – your exam scores, Ethics score, transcripts..
In CA, we also have to get our fingerprints taken with LiveScan that never works (for me). The results of that get sent electronically to the DOJ and FBI and they do a background check. Even though I know LiveScan will not read my fingerprints, I have to get it done twice, wait for the two failures, and then they do the background check with my name.
Then you just wait. Eventually I got a letter that said “Your application is approved and we will issue you the license after you send us another $60.”
I mailed my application on Feb. 26th. My license was issued May 15.
