Work Experience Requirement – Texas State Board

Question for the Texans: the Texas State Board (under the work experience requirement) states the following is required: “a statement describing the type and amount of experience the CPA possesses that qualifies the individual to supervise you.” I’d like to find out what everyone’s experience has been with this requirement. Does the supervisor have to sign this statement specifically, or is this something the candidate prepares based on the supervisor’s work history? Does the State Board require a resume of the CPA, or can the candidate just simply write up a summary of what the supervisor currently does/has done in the past?

The best solution would be to contact your state board because every state is different in regards to experience requirements

I work at a smaller firm with four partners, one of the partners wrote a simple, one paragraph letter stating he is my supervisor, that he has been in public accounting for X years, CPA for X number of years, and he is a partner in charge of audits at the firm.

He attached a document listing 6 of my primary job duties and things I work on at the firm.

At my office (Big 4) the managing partner just signs off on everyone's experience

Recently licensed here: The CPA signing off mainly fills out the “Work Experience” form and needs to give you his qualifications, which is basically a resume. You also need to provide a “Job Description” of the title held during the supervision. For the “Job Description,” I sent in a typed job description with my name, control number, job title, and the description. I did not sign it, and did not have my employer sign it. Hope that answers your question.

BTW – turnaround at the TSBPA is pretty quick. They really have 2 steps that begin on Mondays. They will process payment the Monday after receipt, process application the next Monday sending the rules test, and you should send back the answer sheet the next day. You will get your grade during business hours, and could have your license issued by Friday. Look at my signature for the timeline.

I called the State Board after this post and they confirmed that either an online bio or a resume of the supervisor will suffice. Glad to know that the TSBPA is really quick in turning around your application after passing. Hope to get some passing scores this quarter…I really need the boost!
