Which state should I get my CPA license?

I am taking the CPA exam, hoping to get more job opportunities when I move to Texas ( hopefully next year to reunite with my family!). I work in the industry and have no public accounting experience, don’t think I want to go public in the future either. Now there are couple options in front of me, I am hoping you guys can help me out.

    1. Pass all exams ( I have 3 more to go) and get my license in the state I currently live in, then move. My current employer pays for the study materials, exam fees, etc. Does anyone know if it is practical to maintain a CPA license in one state while you are living in a different state????

    2. Move now to Texas, pass the rest of the exams, and get my Indiana CPA license. Does the state board let you do that?

    3. Get a Texas CPA license. But the Texas education requirement is a little different, meaning that if i want to go this route, I will have to take an additional class or two (such as ethics class) before I am qualify to sit for the Texas exam. I don’t plan on practicing public accounting in Tx so don’t know if it is even worth it!

Decision decision decision…what do you guys think? Any opinion is appreciated!

You are moving to Texas next year and have still 3 exams to go, so I would recommend to first pass the rest of the exams and look into the requirements for TX (how many credits, education, ethics?? – this also might change, so you need to check on this) after passing.

IMO it does not make sense to get licensed in another state if you plan to move to another state in the very same year. Also you might fulfil special requirements in the other state (such as peer reviews, CPEs…). It always depends on the state. If there is no real reason (such as major client in another state or so), it does not make sense to get licensed there.

Also you can still sit for the state of Indiana, although you already live in Texas. After passing all exams you can start the licensing process for TX and get credit for the CPA exams already passed (although you have been sitting for/in Indiana)

Thank you Cessna for your response! I want to get the CPA license to have more advantages in job hunting, not really want to get into public accounting. Is it really necessary to get the Texas license for this reason?

I'm passing all my exams in MO, and transferring it to TX when I graduate and start working.

I didn't apply for TX because they have a “better than you” attitude and require you to take some ridiculous ethics course at an “approved” university. I believe I can take that course at the Big 4 tho.

I am in Texas and agree the requirement to take a 3 hours ethics class at a college is a little much.

Luckily I took the CPA exam many years ago and grandfathered in the requirements from then so I did not have to have the ethics class. At first I did not know that and I was looking for the cheapest online class. Austin Community College was the best option I found at $650.

Most all other schools were masters level and wanted me to take a GRE/MCAT type test to be admitted which I thought was ridiculous as I already have a Masters in Accounting with a 3.8 GPA.

    Reg - Passed 82 Nov 2012 - Becker
    Aud - Passed 86 May 2013 - Becker
    BEC - Passed 88 Aug 2013 - Becker
    FAR - Passed 88 Nov 2013 - Becker

jgh1204, the way PWC explained it was that they offer the course that's taught by someone who instructs at one of the approved schools. It's only a one-day, 8 hour thing. I just know I will get enough “training” in a Big 4 to begin with.
