Hello – I have met all the educational requirements in WA, passed all four sections of the CPA exam, AICPA Ethics Exam, and WA State Ethics Exam. I am currently looking for a verifying CPA to sign off my experience affidavit. In WA, the verifying CPA does not need to be your direct supervisor but I am waiting for the WA CPA board to give me some clarification as to who can qualify as my verifying CPA. So far, I haven’t had any luck in getting a response. It does say that a verifying CPA must have held a valid CPA license to practice public accounting in the state of Washington or be qualified for practice privileges for a minimum of five years prior to verifying the candidate’s experience. Does this mean that any CPA that has a valid CPA license in the state of WA can sign off my papers, regardless of the number of years they have held their license (or does the five year rule apply to them as well)? Also, I am working in the accounting department as a credit analyst at a public company that’s not a public accounting firm. I do a combination of accounting and finance focused work, analyze financial information to render opinions on the financial viability of both private and public companies, and also do some A/R work. I just wanted to make sure this experience would meet the work experience requirement in WA. Unfortunately, none of my supervisors are CPA’s but there are some CPA’s working in the other accounting departments so I am thinking of asking one of those people to sign off my papers, if possible. Do I just need to draft a summarization that shows how I have met the 6 competencies listed in the experience affidavit? How detailed does this have to be? I’ve been struggling with this whole experience requirement as I’m not 100% sure how this works and noone in my department is a CPA. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you!
