I am thinking of moving back to Texas if I find a job and have a question….

I passed my last section in Alabama this last May. In AL, we dont have to take an ethics part… When I move, I will have to take it…

My question is this, what study material do you use? how tough is this test? I see a lot of 100’s and high 90’s scores… also, apparently you have to take it every two years…

is it an online test? so, basically open book?

    thanks very much.

Hi Sbundy – Well as far as the education, you may need to take the ethics class.

As far as the exam, it is the Rules of Professional Conduct Exam and it is nothing to worry about. You will received a booklet of about 10 pages which you will find your answers.

I would definitely contact the State Board to be exact on what you need to do..

    BEC-Passed
    AUD-Passed
    REG-Passed
    FAR-Passed (I AM DONE!!! THANK U LORD!!!!)

It's not really so much an ethics exam as an exam over the rules of professional conduct. They mail you a paper exam of 25 m/c questions. They also give you a copy of the rules of professional conduct. The exam is open book. The only thing you can't do is work with someone else on it. You do it on your own. I thought it was easy. Basic questions, looked up every answer. Don't have my score yet though so I could be wrong. Scores are high because the passing score is high. I believe it's 85 and up. If you don't pass the first time, no biggie, they mail you another one (different questions), keep taking it till you pass. I know a few people that just barely didn't pass the first time.

    AUD 4/1/12 98
    FAR 5/30/12 96
    BEC 7/1/12 92
    REG 8/18/12 94

Oh my gosh, I didn't pass the code of professional conduct exam. I'm an idiot. I researched each question and I must be over thinking this thing. The board is mailing another copy so I can re-take it. Grrr.

Can you request to take this anytime or is it something you have to wait until all 4 exams are passed before you can take it?

It is something you can only take after you have passed all 4 sections of the CPA exam. You should receive this test in the mail automatically as soon as you get your last passing score on the CPA exam. If you come from another state, however, you may need to send a written request. I believe they send you the testlet in the mail upon your request to be certified in Texas from a different state.

You also will need to take a 4-hour Ethics course in addition to the Texas Rules of Professional Responsibility. You can take that course online… albeit it costs in the $400 range (sigh)… I think you can take that course anytime. That is part of the CPE requirements…. in practice they are asking you to do your first CPE before you get your Texas certification. You will then have to take a 4 hour ethics class every two years starting from the year of certification.

Maybe not so straight forward. How is it that I did great on the CPA exam and failed the open book take home?! I scored 72.

Alright, I know this post is two years old, but to those of you reading up to this point…

@outrenthome and other Texas candidates, I just paid $40 for my ethics CPE, Google is your friend. No need to take a live course or anything like that. Don't waste your money!

I am waiting on my last score (Feb 24th release) and am working on getting everything together so I can send in my application as soon as I receive and take the Texas Rules exam they e-mail you.

So I jump through all of the hoops to pass the exams, paperwork, experience, academics and I make an 84 on the ethics exam. I needed an 85. They have to wait 14 days to reissue me another one.

So mad. Just let me have it already!!
