Does anyone know how to get into teaching at a college or university after CPA license? I have a MBA degree but do not plan to do Phd. I am not aiming high. Even teaching at a local community college is enough. I just like to teach and help new students.

I'm pretty sure it varies by state. I know in NY you need a masters to teach k-12, I'm not sure about college though. What state are you in?

    REG 80 (X3) Previous scores 59, 60

You usually need a minimum of a master's degree in the field you plan on teaching. In CA, there is no credential you can get to teach at the college level. But usually, the people they hire to teach accounting or business courses have years of work experiance in addition to a master's degree. You could try applying for teaching positions at online colleges. Their requirements might be different than teaching at a brick and morter college.

I am in TX. I don't want to teach K-12, mainly undergrads or grads. So I need a masters huh…that sounds doozy right now:)

I definitely plan to get industry exp…just right now don't know which field to choose. Teaching is mainly a retirement plan, you know, like a couple courses a semester in the evening 🙂

most of my current professors (in my M.S. Accounting/Finance) have their masters and CPA. I believe at a community college most only have a bachelors and maybe not even the CPA.

I am hoping to teach a few online courses through my college when I graduate, will help a bit toward the student loans I've accumulated and lets face it, I won't even know what to do with myself with “just” one full time job LOL. Its been far too long since I've done that.

Most community colleges in my area have adjunct pools that they are continuously recruiting for. You could submit your application for a continuous recruiting position like that and hope that an opportunity will arise in the future. A friend of mine got a teaching job at the local community college because she knew the dean of the department really well and had been expressing an interest in teaching and growing the department for some time. So when a position opened up, the dean thought she would be a good fit and recommended her.

You could also apply to Kaplan or a learning center and teach a CPA prep course. I bet once you pass the exam, going back over the material and teaching it will feel so much different!

@Calcpa- This is exactly what I want to do…thx for the ideas. Not having Masters stinks though. Now I have one more reason to hate my MBA…lol.

@MLA – looks like you need a vacation….away from internet and everything. Last week we went to Charlotte, NC and then to smoky mountains. That was the only time I was able to forget abt my exam, scores, career & so on & so forth. Man these exams are almost driving me crazy. I really feel ur and everybody's anquish. Studies aside, wait is the most painful. I have a feeling you passed…just from your post. I think u get the subject and you will pass (read with a big disclaimer…I am no psychic or fortune teller:) ) GL waiting

I live in TX and have a friend who worked at a community college and was responsible for hiring new teachers for her department. It's been about 5 years since she did that, but they required a master's. I don't know if your goal is to teach full time or just do it on a part time basis, but it would probably be easier to get a part time job because they wouldn't have to pay benefits. I know that she got frustrated because they always wanted her to hire twice as many people as they needed if they'd been hiring full time staff. Not only did she have to come up with twice as many qualified candidates, but she also had trouble finding and retaining people willing to work on a part time basis.

… an MBA IS a masters degree. With an MBA and CPA you'd meet the education requirements for most community colleges and as a lecturer at some universities as well. Good luck!

MBA is a masters “level” degree but is it a masters “type” degree for teaching position? Some ppl have said col & uni require MS in Accounting.

I got an MS Accy at a 4 year university but took the prereq intro accounting courses at a community college in 2003. The two professors I had there both had MBAs and were CPAs. My friend that hired teachers was in a different CC system, but I know that some of the people she hired had MBAs. Your best bet is to check with the school(s) that you're considering to find out their specific requirements.
