    Hi Everyone,

I’ve been working as an auditor for the government/non-profit area for the past 6 months and it’s my first “real” job. And quite frankly, I HATE it. lol. But still, I plan on staying in the accounting/business/finance world, although I will not be staying in audit for too long. So my regulation exam is coming up this month, and it’s my first one ever. Completely scared to death and it’s been a struggle to study. Anyone have words of advice/comfort for me?

    R 8/11 86

    @ misanthrope87:

REG is a monster in my opinion. Therefore, I would allow plenty of time to cover all the material. What study materials are you using?

    FAR (5/27/10) - 87
    REG (8/27/10) - 66, (2/25/11) - 74, (4/21/11) - 85
    BEC (10/28/10)- 83
    AUD (11/27/10)- 83, CA Candidate NTS#452, Ethics: 90

I was in auditing (financial institutions, and gov't) for two years and could not wait to get out!! It was my first job out of college, I liked auditing alot, but it was crazy working 50+ hrs a week, every single week you are working on a new client, and there seems to always be a senior or manager are always pressuring you to be underbudget even if there are extenuating circumstances. It was an unbelievable amount of stress, and studying for the exam was virtually impossible for me.

Don't worry, the first year is the hardest! Everything is so new, and even though you've audited cash ten times before, its always different for every client, so you always feel like you are doing it for the first time. Trust me, its gets better, especially for governmental clients because the reporting requirements don't change that much, and after a while you start to memorize all the special compliance requirements. Not-for-profits get easier too, although every organization is pretty different from each other, so understanding the business environment for each one is always a challenge. Next year when you get sent back to the same clients again it will be so much easier!

Trust me, hang in there at least two years! In the private industry, if you have at least 2 years of public accounting then you're job opportunities will really open up. And if you can stay in public accounting until you make senior, then thats even better. After two years in auditing, i didn't have the exam done, and I still was able to get a job as a project manager. My friend had 1 year of auditing, but passed the exam, and she got a job as an accounting manager at a not for profit.

As far as REG, it is a monster! But don't let all the material intimidate you. Just stick to your study plan no matter what, and eventually you will have gotten through all the material. I highly recommend practicing sims. When I took it last window, I wasted a lot of time on the research questions and the other sims.

Of the three exams I've taken so far (FAR, AUD, REG), REG was the toughest. I took them all this test window so I don't have my scores yet. I feel really good about the first two but have no idea about REG.

I'd highly recommend using a test bank when preparing. I used Wiley, but I know a lot of people also like Gleim. The more practice questions you do beforehand, the better you'll feel during the test. It helps you get used to the wording you're likely to see and the explanations of the answers (right and wrong) can help you learn the details of the material. The test bank is better than paper because it's more like the exam setting, it goes faster if you use study mode on Wiley, and it gives you your average time/question. Doing SIMS is always helpful, and it would be especially beneficial to you since you haven't had the opportunity to see what they're like on another exam. Also, Jeff's notes are helpful in highlighting the important points as well as saving you some time and aren't that expensive. I used them as a base and added to them when I thought more was needed as I studied the material.

REG is tough because there are so many picky points you can be tested on with tax plus you have to know a lot of business law. The ratio is supposed to be 60/40, but remember that the SIMs are more likely to test tax than business law so you can expect quite a few law MCQ. Also, I've seen a lot of complaints about the wording of the REG questions (especially SIMS). I don't think I had it as bad as some, but I definitely noticed a difference between REG and the other exams as far as clarity re what the question's asking.

If you're totally thrown by a question, just do your best and move on. Remember that 12 of the MCQ and 1 SIM are test questions that won't be graded. If you have no clue, make a guess because wrong answers don't count against you. Make sure to manage your time and allow plenty for the SIMS.

Looking forward, I'd highly recommend taking BEC last if you haven't already scheduled the rest of your exams. There's quite a bit of overlap w/ both FAR and AUD. Personally, I think it's easier to understand these overlapped areas when you're studying FAR and AUD than it would be if you did BEC first. I know I'm glad that I ended up scheduling BEC last.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

    FAR 4/1/11 - 89
    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85

@khboi- I'm using Becker 2011 and Wiley test bank. I heard so many times that it is a beast, that's why I'm scared. x_x. But I'll take a stab at it!

@calcpasoon- Yah, I know sticking it out in audit is good for me. It's funny because before I got this job, I was thinking I should stay in audit until I make manager, and then I thought I should stay in it until I make senior, and then I changed my mind again and thought I should stay in audit for 2 years….now I just wanna leave when my one year is up and I have something on my resume! But you're right, 2 years is solid. I'll see how it goes. ><

@kb24- Thank you for all your input and advice! I'm scared but I will try to do my best, and I surely will not give up. I can't believe you took 3 in one test window. Your a beast! I was originally planning on taking BEC 3rd but from what I read, it did seem like taking it last is a better idea. And you're right, I really need to nail that business law section because its a manageable thing to understand and a good way to get points on those mcqs.
