Taking CPA in a different state?

Hey guys, I’m a senior right now and I’ll be starting at an accounting firm next September.

I live in and will be working in NJ so I originally planned on taking the CPA here.

However, NJ requires me to have a degree, which I won’t. By the time I apply and my transcript’s ready at school, to my understanding, I won’t be able to sit until July.

I was really hoping to pass all 4 parts before I started full time so I looked at different options and sure enough, NY’s requires 120 credits (which I’ll have at the end of this semester) but no degree to sit.

My question is, can I apply to sit for the CPA in NY, even though I live in NJ and will be based out of the NJ office and then apply for reciprocity? Or is reciprocity generally given for people who live in the state they take the exam and move elsewhere?

If I’m leaving out any other information, please don’t hesitate to ask!

    Thanks in advance!

    Peter,

You will have to check both state's rules on this, because the states may vary. I do know that a lot of people sit for exams for other states because of the requirements (like in your situation). I would just make sure before you make the decision so that you don't have difficulty with reciprocity/acceptance.

I myself am taking the exams for AZ (where I was living when I took the first exam) and moved to CA but I am still taking the exams for AZ (you can take at any center in the US, which is nice – you don't have to go back to the state to physically take it there), and any time I need a new NTS I apply through AZ since that is the board that originally found me eligible to sit. Once I complete all four sections (God willing), I will then apply in CA for my CPA license. I made sure I could do this by reading up on the licensing rules for California, so I suggest you look at the same thing for NJ. You will also want to make sure that you don't have to be a resident of NY to sit for the exam there because you will waste your time and money applying to sit just to be found ineligible. Better to find out ahead of time.

    Hope this helps!

    AZ
    AUD - 10/20/2011 - 77
    BEC - 7/28/2012 - 79
    FAR - 4/6/2013 - 79
    REG - 4/18/2013 - 75 (3rd time's a charm!)
