I am really into fashion and love the skinny ties, but wondering if they are appropriate for job searching, career fairs, interviews, work, etc. Are they acceptable??n

If you are trying to get a job I would stay more conservative with your clothing choices. Most of the accounting world is still very professional and conservative (not flashy or fashion forward). For interviewing and such I would recommend keeping it simple, you don't want to stick out for the wrong reasons. Once you have a job and can feel out your employer/office/coworkers you can add some of your own style to your weekly wardrobe.

Basically in my opinion you should stick with the “regular tie” until you get the job. After getting the job you can try switching it up. For my interviews I wear a grey/black suit, white shirt, and “regular” tie. To avoid being too boring or dull I usually wear a tie that is bright and colorful, but still looks good under the suit.

Also, some employers may not care about the skinny tie. But if I was interviewing you I would see you as less professionally dressed than someone wearing a “regular tie”. And I would be willing to bet there are other recruiters and interviewers out there like me. So you could wear the skinny tie, but know you risk running into someone that might not like it. You are pretty safe with the “regular” tie.

Go to your interview conservative.

I went to my interview for the edgy company very conservative, then when I was on the job I was wearing ripped jeans, sport jackets and a headband for my long hair (and I was fitting in just fine).

I think you should wear it if it makes YOU comfortable. This may not be the traditional advice, but coming from someone who appreciates fashion sense, I say go for it! In the end, if you are comfortable in your own skin (skinny tie, in this case) you are more likely to perform with more confidence at interviews/on the job. At least i know i would. I agree the accounting world can be plain and boring, and maybe it's time to change that! Besides, it's still a tie we are talking about here! Not a nose piercing! Who knows, maybe they will admire your courage.

OK so the skinny tie is out then. But what about the skinnier than regular ties??? lol. I believe its considered a skinny tie but not the 1″ skinny tie. Ill have to find it to see whats the width of it.

Think about it like this:

With something like a skinny tie, you have the possibility of someone who just hates skinny ties (for whatever reason). If you show up to an interview and you get one of those people, you have just about lost the job before you even started the interview. These type of things subconsciously affect a lot of people in the decisions they make.

You don't risk that possibility w/ a regular tie, because well a regular tie is a staple of the normal business attire.
