Short on Accounting Hours???

I’m in MO and required to have 33 accounting hours to sit for the CPA exam. I have 31. I was not planning on taking the CPA exam when I graduated 7 years ago and took Managerial Information Systems instead of Accounting Information Systems. AIS was only offered in the spring and I graduated in December, so I took MIS my last semester. The college course catalog literally says that they are the same class. Do you think I have any chance getting my application accepted or will I need to take another accounting class?

I don't know how the state board there will handle it but if I had to guess, you will need to take the 3 hours. I would say go ahead and apply, send in your transcripts and see what they say. If you are short, it is not the end of the world. I had a similar problem and when I applied to my state board, they rejected it and sent me my check back for the fees. They said they would keep my transcripts on file and that when I completed the course, send in that transcript with the new application and I would be good to go.

I wanted to go ahead and start taking the exam since it would be summer semester before I could start a class. I applied under GA law (good chance you qualify there as well) and have already taken and passed audit. Studying now for FAR. Will take a tax class this summer while studying for REG. After the class is complete, I will send in my transcript and transfer credits for the exam from GA back to AL and sit for BEC.

I wanted to update this. I contacted NASBA and they said if I could get a letter from the college stating that the classes contained the same curriculum that they would count MIS as AIS. The head of the business dept was more than happy to write the letter. Even with the letter and the email from NASBA, I was really nervous that my application would not be approved. I got my NTS this morning and I'm taking FAR on 8/23. I'm thrilled that I don't have to take another accounting class to qualify for the CPA exam.
