REG: What do you do when you lose motivation?

    Hi All,

This might just be a vent post, but I am really concerned wit my lack of motivation to Study for REG. Depending on how I did in AUD (waiting for score) REG might be my last section. I think I am entirely burnt out. I had to take last weekend off bc I was not able to focus at all. I thought that would clear my mind a bit and allow me to get right back on track. During the week I did a pretty decent job, but I also only managed to focus for about an hour tops a day. I am currently going through R4 and I have only done lectures and problems, haven’t even looked at TBS. I wanted to use the long weekend to make up for all the time I lost watching TV or being social. However, it is Sunday and the first time I get more than 30 min in front of Becker. Weekdays are so long for me, my job does really mentally exhaust me. So I have had tons of trouble focusing and having info stick.

I am so so so discouraged about REG, bc of all the things I have read. It sounds like no matter how much I study I am destined to fail and not know a lot of the stuff on the exam. It sounds like it is impossible and adding on top of that the fact that I have no more space in my brain to add some tax info, which in real life I could probably just look up. Anyway, I don’t know what to do. I don’t know if I should wait for AUD and then decide whether I want to continue doing this or if I should push myself or take a break.

How do you guys get back on track when you lose motivation?

jdiiorio, I think we all go through this phase. I usually would go thru it all the way until I got a score and then I would get reengergized. Listen, REG is a beast, but people do pass. Don't let that get you down. I suggest you just keep trucking along and eventually your motivation will return. Hang in there man!!!

jdiliorio – I know how you feel!!!! I completely lost motivation when studying for FAR. So much that I didn't even finish 2 of the last Becker lectures (Govnt and NFP Acctg). This was a huge mistake because I recently took the exam on 5/27 and had a good amount of questions over those 2 topics – even a TBS! I guess maybe receiving a failing score this time will get my act back on track, so I can continue on. I hope you don't have to experience that to get motivated…. but man I just didn't have any on this section!!!!!

    BEC - 83
    AUD - 80
    FAR - 74, 75
    REG - 52, 47, 71, XX

@jd Definitely know how you feel about the burn out. I just put up a post a few minutes ago about all I have been through studying for REG since taking BEC 4/24. I have literally been locked up in my home for the past three days trying to prepare for REG on Tuesday. One more day to study. We can do this!!

You are not destined to fail. If you fail, you fail to try.

jdiliorio- I feel your pain! And what's worse is I'm scheduled for REG on Tuesday and I'm completely unprepared. I've lost focus/motivation right here at the end and no matter how much effort I've put in over the past few weeks, it seems I just can't hold this volume of info in my head at one time. I was just ranting earlier that it makes no sense to me to be forced to memorize facts that in real life you only need to know how to find.

Oh, well- I knew going into this test that my path would be difficult- stressful job, 38 with the memory of a 90-year-old, trying to renovate a old house, etc. It make take me several tries but I will pass this exam and I'm sure will, too!

    Hang in there!

That's an extremely normal phase to go through while studying for the CPA. I find that my lack of motivation is the worst when I'm waiting on scores. You don't know if you should study for the next one or if you should start going over the last test's materials again!

My best advice is to write down all the things that you want to accomplish once you are a CPA. I wrote down a list of both career and personal life goals at the very beginning of this process, and whenever I get in a funk, I usually look at the items on that list and it helps me get focused again. I told myself at the very beginning that I wouldn't stop until I had those three letters behind my name, so that post-CPA goal list has definitely helped get me moving!

I hope you did well on Audit!

Hey everyone! thanks so much for the encouragement! I really appreciate the support. Everyone is right I just need to get back on the routine of studying and just look forward to the benefits of passing all parts. I have decided to forget about scores coming out and focusing on passing REG bc even if I don't pass AUD I def want to get REG out of the way, no need to retake both REG and AUD. So my new motto is

Cram for the day (as in today I need to catch up like crazy)

Hermit Month (eliminate all distractions for a month – exam is Jul. 1)

Then freedom!! (assuming I passed AUD since it was my second go ast it)

Again thanks for all the support and good luck to all waiting for scores =)

Once you get that passing score for AUD you are going to have a new motivation. I felt the exact same way trying to study a new section while waiting for a score. Just try and focus as much as you can up until then

    BEC - 86
    AUD - 94
    REG - 88
    FAR - 89

I took REG yesterday and I'm thinking I probably didn't pass; but the way I look at it, oh well. For once, I actually didn't stress. I had to go to a nontypical testing center rather far off and made a fun trip out of it – did a final run through 4 hrs before the test near that far off testing center, I now honestly wish I could study every day if I actually lived in that area.

You don't wanna know how long I've been trying to pass this and how much I've lost; but I'm more motivated than ever now. You should see your two “passes” and use that as motivation IMO. That's what happened for me when I finally passed BEC after 7 tries this January.

Take out your frustrations on AUD. I'm extremely confident about that section since I only took it once, back when I didnt know how to study for this test, a long time ago (lol). I'm already starting my studying for that tonight.

    Starting fresh in 2010 w/Becker!
    BEC: 74,80 (expired), 78 - FAR: 64, 60, 74, 68, 76 - REG: 70,60,75 - AUD: 74,78
Can't change the past but I CAN make the future.
    DONE - 6/8/13. After 6 LONG YEARS.
