But I suppose my experience is “normal”. Just a brutal mind numbing exam that was. Actually feel somewhat decent about the multiple choice although each testlet I put in my fair share of guesses(some of them educated, some of them blind). And then the dreaded sims, I was hopeful that I’d know half of them but its safe to say I bombed that part–definitely didn’t feel comfortable with any of them but feel like I picked up some points here and there. I do feel confident about the research question though. Overall if this were my first exam I’d think there was no doubt that I failed—but just knowing the process and being used to this feeling I am somewhat hopeful that when the chips fall I can hopefully sneak by with a pass. If so, I am done. In the meantime I am debating whether to re-apply with my state board just in case I don’t pass, I figure I will gladly eat the $50 if I end up passing, and if I fail I will at least be in a good position to schedule a retake soon—anyone ever do this?

Those using Becker, I am happy with how they prepared me. Some questions were definitely head scratchers for me but I don't blame the review program—could've been pretest or just a hard question on a topic that I wasn't strong in. I also can't speak for the Becker sims at all as I didnt use them(didnt even take a practice exam) I was told they don't resemble the exam so I didn't bother, wanted to focus more on knowing the material, but for all I know they might've helped.

As for time management, I left about an hour and 30-40 mins for the sim and used up most of it. Finished with about 8 minutes then double checked over my sims until my time ran out. The sims took awhile for me just because of the difficulty. I spent some time trying to research the task but most times was unsuccessful. I did move briskly through the multiple choice as I wanted to have extra time on sims and now that I probably bombed the sims anyway I wish I put some more attention to detail in the MC.

@BakedCPA Thanks for taking time out to make such an informative reply. I have taken 1 exam in the new format – FAR and on the exam day I did realize that Becker Simulations were easier and shorter than the actual exam. This is going to me last exam hopefully ever at the prometric. Thanks once again.

@ DhirenSarin – You have to know EVERYTHING about tax: including the exceptions, rules, phaseouts, etc. It's better to be prepared than sorry.

@herbert7890 Thanks. Did you use Becker too? If yes, did you try supplement questions?

Yes, I used Becker for all the parts. I did most of the mcqs twice, but I did the supplemental Mcqs once.

Hi Can anybody tell how to effectively search for research question? I am not able to find answers easily. Is there a technique?

The research part was hard for me also. Could never find them on the Becker software but somehow I got an easy one on the real test and found it almost instantly.

Lol @ the title of this post. Yeah……REG is a beast. Tax concepts have so many different exceptions and phase outs and rules that it is VERY easy to become confused or get a topic you swear you know but get a twist in there that you don't know how to handle. I firmly believe that FAR and BEC are easier because those 2 exams you can actually reason a logical answer because those two concepts are more logical. What you think maybe logical with REG maybe far from what the actual answer is. Man I hope I passed this test, I don't ever want to see it again!!!

I used Becker. Regarding Ethics and Professional Responsibilities (Ancillary Material on Chapter 4). I have studies the entire chapter and did the multiple choice in the software. Lot of people say that it is an important topic and must be done well as it has 15% weightage. Can anybody suggest?

@DhirenSarin I was about to ask the same question. I am almost done with REG 4 except for the ancillary material.

My friends who took the exam said they wished they had gone over it after they took the exam. So I am definitely going to pay attention to that part. My question is: does anyone have some notes they took or a website where I can get notes that follow the becker plan for this section bc this ancillary material (at least for me) is really hard to follow and understand it sounds like it was written by lawyers in really complex confusing sentences.

Maybe my brain isn't working anymore, but if anyone has simple english notes on this or any suggestions, please help =) thanks

@jdiiorioJeff's Ninja notes aren't organized exactly like Becker but do a pretty good job on this topic.

Good luck to you and everyone else testing tomorrow!

Dhiren and jdiioria I would highly recommend brushing up on the Ethics portion in Becker. Also jdiioria if you click on R4 and in that section click “review class notes” there is about a 7 page summary of notes and some good bullet points about the Ethics portion of the chapter, and in addition to that there are youtube videos posted by Becker back in January that also gives a decent summary of the ethics material. Good luck!
