I am compiling the info for my application and need a letter from my employer as well as 3 character reference letters. What do you have them say? Plenty of people want to say I am a character, LOL.

Just a short & sweet ” I have known MLA for 3 years and find her to be of good moral character”. Does anybody have an example they’d like to share?

I’m in MA and going for a non-reporting license, FWIW.

I'm not sure what should particularly be for a CPA license applicant…I guess the good moral character thing…ethically responsible…serious about professional conduct…maybe something that happened that showed how truly moral you are and indicates just what a wonderful CPA you would be…

I just received my packet from the Texas board and I don't see anywhere where it asks for reference letters. I guess I'll email them to be sure.

@mIa – I'll totally write a reference letter for you! That being said, its just a formality. It really doesnt matter what the letter says. The exercise is just to see if you can get a few people to vouch for you.

Yeah, California doesnt require reference letters either.

Seriously, though, I don't quite get why you need the character reference letters…If someone gets a negative character reference letter, can that keep him from being licensed? After all the studying and passing, education and experience, is that another way to weed out who not to license?

Interesting, my State had a canned reference letters that needed to be signed & notarized by 3 people.

I guess there must be some reason each state has it's own type of system in place for licensure…never heard of the reference letters for this before, though.

I'm a NH CPA and going for a reciprocal license in MA. Massachusetts requires the letters be addressed to them and dated within one year. My NH letters have been dated within one year, but are addressed to the NH board. Anyone see a problem with me using the same letters and changing the addressed party to the MA board? I'd hate to get dinged with something immoral or unethical regarding a state board.
