Passing CPA Exam vs Licensed CPA

I currently work in private industry, wrapping up my degree and looking forward (kind of…) to sitting for my exams next year. I’m wondering if anyone can comment on the difference between passing the CPA exam and being a licensed CPA; that is, if I’m trying to get a promotion, new job, etc, do you think private employers are more interested in someone who’s passed the exam, or is licensed to practice?

I think I’m going to have some problems fulfilling the experience requirements, and need to figure out if I should pursue my license.

    Thanks!

I wpild suggest go for the CPA. More and more employers are interested in hiring CPAs vs non-CPAs. With the number of accounting/fraud issues that have hit various industries companies do want that new employee with a CPA. There have been several people posting on this site who had to go outside their company to get someone to signoff and approve their work. They contacted their Board and found alternatives to the normal way of getting work experience signed off.

    for example:

    – outside CPA firm

    – College Accounting Teacher w/ CPA

    – A CPA willing to review your work, etc.

If you've passed, it's somewhat easier to land interviews for a public accounting job. If you're licensed with some experience, there's definitely more options available.

    I really can't pass again!

With little to no experience being able to say you've passed and just need work experience is going to be similar to having it in hand. I work in private industry and our division controller signed off on my work experience. Is there no one in your work with a CPA that could sign off?

If you are going for a more advanced position (controller/CFO) then you would probably need the license in hand.

In any event, go for it and get it. Everybody has a MBA these days. Having the CPA designation will increase your chances of landing the interview even in non-accounting positions.
