Passed the NY CPA but starting work in GA

    Hi all,

I just finished the exams for NY, but I’m about to start working in GA. Am I supposed to get reciprocity (and if so, how does that work), or can I still be a “NY” CPA after 1 year of work in GA (and not in NY)? Kinda confused about this process post-exams and when I call up I’m put on hold or transferred around for hours.

Also, want t make sure there’s no ethics portion of the exam for either state.

    Thanks so much in advance!

Not sure on ethics for GA but there is no ethics for NY.
I think you can be licensed in NY as long as you are supervised by a CPA licensed in the state you are working.
ie: you need to be supervised by a GA CPA if you are working in GA.
Your supervisor/employer will need to sign off on your Form 4B. You can find and research this form on the NYS CPA website.

Alternatively, if you intend to live and work in GA from here forward, you may want to transfer your passing scores to GA, and be licensed there instead of NY.
The NY fees might be higher, and not necessary for you to pay if you are not working here.

    HI !!
I have finished my exams in Missouri and might move to Colorado before I finish my one-year training required by Missouri to apply for a license. I am currently preparing for my Ethics exam as required by the State of Missouri to apply for a license.

Am not sure where to apply for the license? Will Colorado accept my work experience and score information from the State of Missouri?

    Thanks in advance

I just called in and was told that it doesnt matter what state you get your “CPA work experience hours” in, it just has to be under a US CPA and your supervisor just has to sign off on the form for whatever state youre applying through.

QUESTION: Does anyone think it matters what state you get your CPA through? When (if ever) would it matter?

It would matter if the state you end up being licensed in has standards below a state you intend to apply for reciprocity with to transfer your license.
I think all 50 states all recip. now, but lets say SC only has a 120 hour requirement, but then you want to transfer your license to NY where there is a 150 hour requirement.
NY might not recognize the license as the requirements are not equivalent.

I am not saying this is the case, but it would be a reason to research before you choose one state over the other.
If you work in GA, and intend to stay working in GA, I would try and get licensed there, unless there would be anything preventing you from being recognized in NYS should you come back here.
