I just submitted my application to the Board and hopefully will be licensed in several weeks. My employer does not know I’ve been sitting for the exam. Has anyone not told their employer until you were licensed but then regretted it? My concern is they’ll see me as ‘looking elsewhere’ so I’ll be treated poorly or hold it against me because I never mentioned it until now or whatever else. I’m getting promoted shortly so whether I’ll be looking elsewhere partly depends on my salary and responsibility increase. Oh, and I didn’t tell my employer in the first place because I thought for sure I’d be leaving right after I got my license but I found out recently about the promotion.

Does anyone see a downside to telling your employer you’re licensed or am I just being paranoid? Experience sharing and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes supervisor reaction is interesting to say the least. I think it depends on a lot of factors. Do they have a CPA already? If so, it will more than likely be a very positive reaction. If not, are they insecure? That's a huge one and it can create an issue in two ways. One, is that they are afraid you are going to take their job and Two they are afraid you are going to get your cert and leave, potentially making them look bad at hiring/turnover scorecard or what have you.

As mentioned above, I told my boss about it right away and it has been interesting. On the face hes a cheerleader…”Great Job!” kinda crap. But being a rather avid poker player I've learned to look beneath the mask…and beneath the mask he is seething. What's interesting is that he keeps trying to make my life hell but he isn't good enough to do it. It's been a completely fascinating experiment…I can't wait to see what happens when I take my CBA experience form to his boss to sign off 🙂

So I finally told my boss this morning that I passed the CPA exam. I was nervous since I didn't know the reaction I would get but she seemed genuinely happy for me and is taking me out to lunch to celebrate. She hasn't told the higher ups yet though so I'm also anticipating their reaction. Anyway, I'm glad it's finally out there!
