NYS Work Experience under an EA

    Hello all,

I have been working under an Enrolled Agent for the past 6 months and love working there and doing tax work. From what I can tell, completing a year under an EA doesn’t fulfill the work experience requirement to obtain a NYS license (must be a CPA?). I do have an offer to start this summer with one of the Big 4 in Auditing (which isn’t the field I want to go into at all, but didn’t have much of a choice.. I got it through a friend of a friend). I guess my question would be: Should I stay under the EA and keep studying and worry about the work experience when I pass all 4 or take the offer and study/work under CPA’s simultaneously?

    Any advice would help!

    AUD- 56, 64, 73, 70
    REG- 57, 66, 80
    BEC- 8/31/12

    Hey six6soca,

I would say that ultimately the choice is yours but you never know how easy or difficult it will be to get an opportunity like this in the future to work for a Big 4 firm. This way you will be in the process of getting the necessary experience to eventually get your license once you pass the 4 parts of the exam. Unless you really enjoy why you are doing now or if you feel that you will get another opportunity later to work under a CPA to fulfill the requirement I would advise you to go for the job with the Big 4 firm. Again, the choice is yours, but that's what I would probably do in your situation.

    FAR - 81
    REG - 75
    AUD - 85
    BEC - 79

Thank goodness it's over... Now on to the next step...
