Hi all – Feeding off of the work experience topic, i see that this question was not raised for NY. I was curious if anyone has been in this situation for New York?? I called our state board today, and mentioned that the consulting firm I would be a prospective candidate for does NOT have a CPA in their accounting staff, but the external auditor comes several times a week and would be reviewing my work. She seemed to think that this would probably not suffice, and if it did, my time would be allocated to those days that he was actually on site. All I was given was a general e-mail to the state board, and have not received any comment. If someone knows where this may be documented, or if my experience would count, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I need to decide on this job by Thursday!!!! THANKSn

I think you can go back a number of years in NY, maybe a job you had before where there was a CPA boss of your or something. Actually, in many jurisdictions, including NJ there isn't any mention of time requirement of when you have to gain your one year experience. So in theory, you can go back to your first job after you got your BS for experience, ….?n

So in principle, the BS you got 20 years ago is still good and so should the one year experience you got after your BS.n

I was told that under current law, individuals taking the CPA exam for the first time after Jan. 1, 2000, must complete work experience within 120 months (10 years) preceding the date of application for the CPA certificate. I originally thought that you could go back indefinately…..so your current boss doesn't have to be a cpa for you to get your license as long as a prior boss years ago was a CPA…n
